Only 2 eggs retrieved, AMH 9.7

Just had egg collection today and we only got 2 eggs, there were only 4 follicles big enough but 2 were empty. I'm over 40 and had IVF 3 years ago and got over 15 eggs (my AMH was in the 20s 3 years ago).
So feeling really disappointed with this.

It took 3 cycles, 35 eggs and 8 good quality embryos to result in our little boy a couple of years ago...not feeling so positive with only 2 eggs from our first collection this time.

Does anyone have any positive stories of low number eggs over 40 years old?

Not over 40 as such (though I am now 🤣) but back when I was 40 I “only” got 4 eggs - and all 4 fertilised and 1 became my son (2 others were frozen). You don’t say your exact age (41 is very different to say 44 when it comes to using own eggs) - but apparently sometimes less is better as it can mean they are better quality and both of your 2 might fertilise. 🤞for you!

MammaKG · 08/02/2025 06:35

That's amazing! I'm 42 but I was 39 when I needed that many eggs to give me my son. We have 2 more cycles but just hoping we can get more thank 2 to give us a chance 🤞🏾

While I’m so grateful it worked, it was only after 6 failed IUI’s and 2 previous failed IVF transfers (from round 1) that I finally got lucky on my 2nd round at 40 -I think my doctor threw every medication at me for my final round! (I was on 4 injections a day and even had 3 trigger injections 🤣). So unfortunately if my frozen transfer doesn’t work for a second child, at age 43 now that will be it for me as I can’t justify the costs for more full rounds.

While I do think you are very brave cycling again at 42; anecdotally I have heard of several people being successful in their early 40’s as long as they can afford multiple rounds. I really hope you are one of the lucky ones 🤞

Only 1 egg fertilised which was gutting. But that is now developing well and on day 3 has 12 cells so keeping everything crossed it can make it to day 5 and still be good 🤞🏾

Im on my first every IVF round, and just had my egg collection - they only got 2!
I'm 35, and they said my AMH was average for my age so no issues. And for the scans every other day up to my injection I had loads of nice big follicles. I just don't understand why we only got 2 and I am so gutted and upset.

MammaKG · 10/02/2025 21:21

@Baggott1990 same happened on my first round when I was 38...my AMH was 28 so slightly high for my age. I was so upset as they had led me to believe that I would have quite a lot of eggs and possible OHSS! But then my meds got tweaked for the next round and it was much more.

I'm now on the same increased meds but a massive decline in numbers from my 2nd and 3rd egg collection.

They do say your very first round is a bit of trial and error as they don't know how you will respond, just how most people of your age with that AMH generally do.

I did read up a little on empty follicle syndrome as we had 2 empty decent sized follicles (been reading all sorts since Friday! 🤦🏾‍♀️)

Just an update, our embryo didn't make it to a blastocyst unfortunately. Had our consultation and a few tweaks are being made to try and improve it

@MammaKG I'm so sorry to hear that, this process really isn't easy. I hope that your consultation gave you some support and the tweaks they're prescribing work for you

MammaKG · 13/02/2025 16:45

@Baggott1990 I definitely feel better after our consultation, she always seems to be able to make me feel positive by the end of the consultations! Also, I can't do anything about what's happened so it's pointless me getting wound up and wondering what if. Just got to focus on moving forward to the next round x

So sorry to hear that 😢 Were you already on the max dose of meds? I needed extra flare medication for a “boost” (buserelin) first on top of the max dose of Menopur and 3 trigger shots in order to finally get what the clinic said looked like good eggs and which led to my DS.

But while my body seemed to need all the meds it could get; yet others over 40 seem to have success with the Care clinic approach - minimum medication “semi- natural” cycles. It makes it so difficult to know what approach is best, but hopefully your consultant has some ideas for next time 🤞

MammaKG · 13/02/2025 20:04

@IamnotwhouthinkIam so I actually asked about double triggers etc but she explained why it wasn't relevant for me. I've been on the max dose of meds but she is going to change it to a different one and add something else into the mix.

They followed the last protocols as we got our little boy from that a few years ago but I think now they are probably taking into account my age and looking at it slightly differently. I do feel positive after the consultation but it's just such an unpredictable journey!

@IamnotwhouthinkIam we are with Care but they have actually given me the max dose since my very first cycle failed

Hey how are you ?
Have you done another round yet ?

MammaKG · 27/04/2025 13:35

@worldwidetravel2017Hi, I’m good. We did another cycle with only 2 eggs but neither fertilised and now on our last cycle of the embryo banking…highly unlikely anything will come from it. We have also had a video consultation with a clinic in Athens and if nothing happens with this last round here we will be going there
