DHEA and low AMH

Hey.
Has anyone used DHEA due to low AMH?

Did it work? Thank you xx

I’ve been put on it after a total failed fertilisation. Think it’s more for quality. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s anything that can undo the biological clock

Nobodyknowsitall · 16/01/2025 15:55

:-( what is your amh? Xx

Nobodyknowsitall · 16/01/2025 15:56

I've had a total failed fertilisation before aswell. It is just shit :( I'm sorry you are going through this aswell xx

ivfjourneyandme · 16/01/2025 15:58

@Nobodyknowsitall its beyond shit, isn’t it! How many cycles have you had? My AMH is 1.9 so desperately low! Managed 4 mature eggs x

Nobodyknowsitall · 16/01/2025 16:12

I have had 3 cycles now. Got 5 eggs on the first 2 and 6 on the 3rd but onewasn't mature so I suppose 5 each time. My amh is 5.2 and afc is 9. I'm trying the max dose of meds this time so hopefully it does the trick. First 2 cycles consisted of a mild dose and 3rd one was standard dose. Have you changed protocol? Xx

ivfjourneyandme · 16/01/2025 16:15

Which cycle was your failed fertilisation? I’m switching from short to long cycle x

Nobodyknowsitall · 16/01/2025 16:46

The 2nd one but the fertilisation wasn't good over all really. First round I had 2 fertilise and final I had 3. None made it. Its just exhausting isn't it xx

ivfjourneyandme · 16/01/2025 18:53

It’s absolutely horrific. We’ve been told if we have complete failed fertilisation again, it’s game over

Nobodyknowsitall · 16/01/2025 19:02

What clinic are you with? Would consider going abroad? X

OP posts:
ivfjourneyandme · 16/01/2025 19:31

TFP Fertility in Nottingham. No I don’t think I’d go abroad, not much more than can do compared to here I don’t think x

I had AMH of 0.04 at 38. Had been trying to conceive for years. I was on DHEA for 9 months and then month I stopped taking it I fell pregnant naturally. Taking DHEA reduced my FSH - from 17+ to 5/6. I also did lots of other things to try and improve my chances but I do think the DHEA helped, I only took 25g per day. Definitely get your levels checked before taking and after a month on it - too much can have the opposite effect.
Oh one other thing, the month I conceived I was taken melatonin every night for 3 weeks. I had sooo much good sleep and felt amazing! I think my sleep had been pretty bad beforehand

This is great. Thank you :)

I've done 4 cycles, and currently stimulating for 5th. I started taking DHEA in prep for my 4th cycle. I was told to take 25mg twice a day, however it stopped my period so I just took 1 per day (as guessing I didn't need that much).

AMH was 4.4 when I started, went down to 1.93 and now at 2.1 after ovarian PRP (not sure if it's that which made a difference).

Cycle 1 - 4 eggs, 2 blasts (shot protocol)

Cycle 2 - 2 eggs, 1 blast (short protocol)

Cycle 3 - 1 eggs, 0 blasts - fertilisation failure (short protocol)

Cycle 4 - cancelled cycle (long protocol with buserelin and my ovaries were down regged too much, they never woke up, and I actually went into a temporary menopausal state. I will never do long protocol again, but we wanted to try)

Cycle 5 - short protocol with oestrogen priming and growth hormone. Currently 3 follicles so DHEA hasn't increased the amount so far but will update this thread over the coming weeks to see if the final results are any better.

Lozzy000 · 17/01/2025 15:15

@ivfjourneyandme I definitely wouldn't say it's game over. Definitely get a second opinion from some other clinics that specialise more with low AMH.

My first clinic didn't believe in DHEA / growth hormone / melatonin / steroids etc. They just went in with MAX doses of stims. The clinic I'm at now have given me lots more to try to help low AMH - so I did growth hormone priming and 10 days with stims, lower dose of stims but for longer, dexamethasone to help response to stims, ovarian PRP, melatonin, DHEA, more detailed supplements, oestrogen priming, and also DNA frag for my husband.

x

ivfjourneyandme · 17/01/2025 16:21

@Lozzy000 how’s the cycle looking so far with all of that on board?

Lozzy000 · 17/01/2025 16:57

@ivfjourneyandme I had 3 follicles on Wednesday at 3,4,5mm. That's after 6 days of stims, so a very slow start. However they had progressed from the last scan and I'm not taking max stims doses this time around. I have another scan on Monday, so think that'll be a better judge of whether things are still progressing. Apparently oestrogen priming can slow the start down too.

ivfjourneyandme · 17/01/2025 17:58

It’s so draining, isn’t it 😭

Nosejug · 24/02/2025 18:49

Hello all, I had the same question about taking DHEA (I have low amh). I started ubiquinol (just this January) because it seems that there are no side effects really. I'm keen to try DHEA, but have heard of the side effects, and reading through this thread I really don't like the idea of it messing with my already messed about cycles (two max drug long protocol IVFs, one spontanous preg and MMC). I've had such bizarre bleeding this month...

Does everyone get their DHEA tested before taking it? I wonder if i took the 25 dose daily if that would be small enough not to have negative effect. Seems like a bad gamble...this is our last year of trying.

ivfjourneyandme · 24/02/2025 20:37

@Nosejug ive had zero side effects to the DHEA. And didn’t test beforehand. On 75mg a day x

Nosejug · 24/02/2025 22:20

Thanks @ivfjourneyandme did you take it off your own back or were you instructed to? And… if you don’t mind me asking, where did you buy it? It’s a minefield out there!

ivfjourneyandme · 25/02/2025 14:50

@Nosejug consultant told me to take it after first cycle resulted in total failed fertilisation.

I ordered from Bovea online

Peonies94 · 25/04/2025 06:34

@smashedbanana whixh clinic did you use if you don’t mind me asking?

Had the news yesterday that my amh is the same and I’m 31 so it’s a complete shock! Would love to do anything I could to bring the number up! My current clinic didn’t mention that this is anything they offer, so wondering from reading this if i should maybe look into other clinics! Hard for the info to sink in right now!

smashedbanana · 25/04/2025 06:39

@Nobodyknowsitalli conceived naturally, not through IVF. I had my tests done with my GP. I’m currently 26 weeks pregnant. Sorry to your AMH is so low, that must have been a shock. You can still release good eggs with low AMH but it’s difficult to get good results with IVF as they can’t get so many eggs so it reduces your chances xx

Peonies94 · 25/04/2025 10:40

@smashedbanana sorry just read your message again now! Thank you! Congratulations and good luck!
yes such a massive shock and have other issues which are also preventing pregnancy which we were already aware of, just always thought ivf would be our back up plan, until yesterday!
