Miscarriage during fertility investigations

We have been TTC our first baby since August 2022 - tracking ovulation etc. We are currently having investigations for infertility (mine have concluded, found overactive thyroid and vit b12 deficiency, OH has an appointment for his). Much to our happy surprise we fell pregnant in Dec but sadly miscarried at 6 weeks.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Will the NHS still do investigations for my OH or do we have to try for another year to be diagnosed infertile again?

I know I should have hope that we fell pregnant in the end but I was 31 when we started TTC. I’m 35 this year and feel time is ticking.

Hi, sorry to hear about your MC. This will not put you at the back of the queue for NHS so everything should just continue as it was. The only thing they might do as well is a HyCoSy or HSG to check that everything is cleared from your uterus. They often do these anyway though as part of the standard tests pre IVF if that’s the route you end up going down. Good luck!

This is reassuring. Thank you so much.

@JugglingPlates90 , I’m so, so sorry for your loss. I also conceived naturally and had a miscarriage while waiting for all my fertility investigations. It didn’t affect my referral, and in fact, as it was my second early miscarriage I had some additional tests to look for any potential causes of recurrent miscarriage. However, it did unfortunately affect our IVF funding as were deemed not infertile enough for IVF on the NHS. This was challenged & we did win the case, but ultimately ended up going down the private route anyway for various reasons. To help give you some hope, I was told that getting pregnant, even if it ends in MC, gives a better prognosis for healthy future pregnancies. Hopefully this is true for me as I am currently 17 weeks pregnant following a successful IVF round & desperately hoping for a happy ending.

Take care of yourself. Every miscarriage is heartbreaking but after TTC for so long it is even harder. Wishing you the very best of luck for the rest of your journey.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is so hard. Finally being pregnant felt like being on the holiday of a lifetime that I’d looked forward to and planned for so long. Thank you for sharing your experience. We’ve been saving as much as we can in case private IVF is needed in the future.

The nurse at the Early Pregnancy Clinic told me similar - that 1 in 3 first pregnancies end in miscarriage but only 1 in 4 subsequent ones. So interesting!

Sending best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and happy ending for you!
