Single or double embryo transfer ?

2014-2017 we had multiple rounds of ivf and an ICSI cycle . 4 transfers (all single transfers) 2 were day 3 embryos and 2 were blastocyst. None worked 😭
In late 2019 we had one more ICSI cycle and only got 3 eggs and only 2 fertilised properly and I asked for them to be frozen at day 5 (it was a freeze all cycle due to ohss risk) but they froze them day 3 as only had 2 so I was a bit upset as felt day 5 blastocysts would have been better.

I planned to wait 3-6 month then have a FET. But I got pregnant in 2020 had my dd and we decided in 2021 to just try again naturally . Of course nothing has happened dd must have been just one bit of luck ! We want to use the frozen embryos but I’m not sure 1 or 2? The clinic said due to the past failures and my age now and the fact they are day 3 embryos that it’s fine to transfer both . I remember from cycles before how they always said just one.

Has anyone done a double transfer of day 3 embryos ? What was the outcome ? Thankyou !

I would only go for a double transfer if you are happy and able to look after twins. Go to a twins trust meet up or get more info online.

We had a day three transfer of two embryos due to ‘failures’. Have twins now. I love them so much but know their needs would be met better if we had them one at a time.

done people get triplets from two embryos. It’s a risk I wouldn’t take again.

I’ve not heard of day 3 transfers working and I was shocked when even my day 5 embryos didn’t work. It’s good to hear it can work as the only success if heard was blastocysts. I was annoyed at first at the clinic as I’d said please keep them growing till day 5 but they said there was a chance id have had nothing to freeze so it was day 3. We could manage twins I think I was just surprised how now it seems to be an option whereas prior to that it wasn’t at all and had to be single transfers

Thankyou so much I was worrying about it I think I’d got the impression that the chances were much lower but it’s probably just due to my prior experiences. I need to be more positive! Hearing success stories has helped !

I have my only DC from a double embryo transfer (3 day embryos). I have 2 more 3 day embryos frozen and am planning to transfer soon- but am just debating whether to do another double transfer and or ask for two single transfers.

My clinic believe in freezing the embryos at 3 days if you only have a few and also in doing double transfers for 3 day embryos (or the over 40’s) as they say in those circumstances it really increases the odds of it working and that twins are rare - but I must admit I feel even more nervous about doing double transfer this time as it’s my last chance (too old now to do full IVF again!).

Good luck!

5 years ago a friend had a 2 day transfer of her only embryo and she now has her son. Probably rare, but it worked for her. My transfers have always been day 5.
