Confused about AFC

Hello,

I'd really appreciate some advice from this wonderful forum of wisdom!

I had a consultation for IVF in early October where I had a scan and blood test. Firstly, my AMH level was 16.3 pmol/L but the consultant didn't really explain if this was ok or not? I'm 33 and have PCOS.

What confuses me is the AFC results- the first scan I had showed 14 follicles on the right ovary, and 11 in the left ovary - which I think is ok?

Then, I had another scan as part of the saline sonogram and HyCoSy a month later and the same consultant said the right had 9 follicles and the left had 8. There was less than a month between the two scans. I've tried to google to understand this, but it's confusing. Why would I have less follicles a few weeks later?

Many thanks in advance!

Hey @MitchyTitchy
Im sorry I don’t have an answer for you but I am super interested to see what people say as I’ve had two scans (although were more like 6 months apart) and they showed totally different AFCs and I didn’t get it. Also had AMH tested twice and both were different, it’s so confusing!

Also, not sure if this helps but in my latest test results they added this guide for AMH, although not sure if it means total AFC or on each side. But either way it seems like your AMH is good!

Hi both, so your AFC and AMH are not set things. Especially the AFC, it’s just measuring how many follicles are showing for that one cycle. Example, I’ve attempted 5 egg collection rounds and had an AFC scan, it’s averaged out about 8 but one month I had 6 and another month I had 18! It just depends on your body that month.

Your AMH also moves around a bit but not as much.

good luck!
