IVF ultrasounds discomfort

Does anyone else hate the IVF pelvic ultrasound scans?

I just find them so uncomfortable and the sonographer always seems a bit surprised when I am wincing at her moving it around inside me.

Am I the only one who finds it quite gruelling just having a scan, especially when it moves up to the ovaries and the follicles are getting bigger?

Just wondering if it's normal!

I've found this too, usually as the follicles and my ovaries increase in size it becomes more uncomfortable - as you described too. On one occasion I found it quite painful due to the position she had to move it to for a good view of one of my ovaries and I also winced and I also said 'ow' at one point. That particular scan was probably the most painful part (still definitely tolerable) of the IVF round including injections and egg collection.

I'm not sure there's much way around it, other than thinking okay this will be over soon and it's a really important part of the process. Sometimes for things like that, the dentist etc. I carefully dig my finger nail into my finger so I concentrate on that instead which can help as short term relief/distraction.

@strawberrylaces12 Thanks for the reply, good to hear I'm not alone (although sorry you're going through similar!) I agree it can be the most painful part of the process!

That's a good tip about the fingernail as a short term distraction.

Good luck with your treatment if it's still ongoing.

Yes! 100% uncomfortable but not painful for me 😣 my left ovary is smaller so they have been struggling to see it!

I find that putting my hands over my face helps to relax 🙏
