My husband and I need icsi, I’ve been doing long protocol and I’m having egg retrieval on Monday morning. It wasn’t confirmed until this morning though. It says on the info that my husband needs to abstain for 2-3 days before egg retrieval.
So the last time my husband did the deed was Thursday night. Which would be over three days from ER, so maybe a bit too long? But if he does it tonight (Saturday) it will only be 36 hours before hand which is too short of time! I don’t know what to do for the best and I’m freaking out and also really angry at him because I asked him to do it last night to be on the safe side

I don't think sperms "goes off"

Serendipity24 · 10/08/2024 18:26

He would be fine either way, my Spanish clinic says 2 to 5 days abstinence. If he wants to do it today, why not do it now instead of waiting till later.

Ok that makes me feel better thank you. He’s at work at the moment

For our latest round of ICSI our clinic told us that due to new research the advice had changed to 1 to 2 days abstinence before egg retrieval. This was just 4 weeks ago.

The fresher the better I read before!

It’s mainly in case your husband cannot ejaculate. And agree with PP, I think there are recent studies showing the fresher the better - could be coincidence but we had our best round sperm-wise when DH spilled his sample and had to go again half an hour later!

Thank you everyone, I feel abit more relaxed now so fingers crossed for some good quality embryos!

@Dove88 we are currently going through our IVF we have been told 2 days maximum abstinence we are due egg retrieval on Wednesday they have told us the day you have trigger is the day he needs to 'release ' ready for egg collection

We only had 24 abstinence for our icsi round as we were having due to male factor, fresher and therefore hopefully less damaged sperm for the sample, they only need a tiny amount so not a problem at all, best of luck :)
