GP vs metformin

Hoping for advice/experiences with asking the GP for metformin for PCOS.
Long story short, I was referred for IVF in 2021 with "unexplained infertility". I am lucky to have my little girl from our one NHS round, it was touch and go because I overstimulated and went from 25 eggs down to one viable embryo. Our consultant at the clinic diagnosed me straight away with PCOS based on my egg reserve and infrequent periods.
During treatment I got a letter from the consultant to recommend Metformin whether the transfer was successful or not, in order to regulate my cycles and encourage ovulation. He advised starting on 500mg and working up to 1500mg over a few weeks.

I recently rang my GP to start the process as I'm now 14 months postpartum and my cycles are as bad as ever. GP has said they need a letter directly to them saying the same as what is already on my letter. IVF clinic say they don't liaise with GPs and my consultant doesn't even work there anymore, so a different consultant might want to see me first, which would cost us money. I already have the letter, surely my GP should accept this?!

That’s really annoying. Could your GP send a referral that’s asking for advice (rather than an appointment) to gynaecology? That would mean you didn’t have to wait to see them but hopefully get the treatment?
also ask a different GP at the practice maybe?
