What happens if…

Hello,
Due to start long protocol of IVF on 29th May- first injection to ‘take control’ as my embryologist put it. However I’m ovulating this week and me and my husband are DTD (we have unexplained fertility) my question is- by the time I have the appointment I’ll be only 6 DPO so way too early to tell if I’m pregnant or not.

What happens if by some miracle I fall pregnant and the injection is given? Could I miscarry? Or can they check if I’m pregnant before the injection is given? Anyone know how it works?

No they can’t tell if you are pregnant before your injection and the down regulation can cause you to miscarry - you should have been advised not to have unprotected intercourse in this cycle.

They normally advise protected sex or some clinics will say no sex, during the treatment cycle.

I asked this question in the final meeting and she said it was fine to try but I remember thinking at the time that didn’t sound right! I’ll call the clinic tomorrow- thank you so much for responding!

Sorry no help as we have been TTC for four and a half years so can't imagine it will happen for us prior to stating, but just wanted to say we are starting long protocol on the 28th, good luck xx

@MerryBrickHelper no worries, hope it all goes ok! Are you down regulating with burserelin? Just wondered as it's been out of stock for a while and I wondered if it was back in stock now.

MerryBrickHelper · 21/05/2024 21:22

@CakePigeon30 what advice were you give regarding sex before down regulation?

@lemons44 I will check my paperwork tomorrow! Have you been through IVF already? Any advice?

They haven't mentioned it to me, but I have an appointment on 28th to get my first injection and they said they'll go over it in more detail then xx

I am doing a long protocol cycle at the minute and researched exactly this before I started as I hated the idea of missing a month of trying to conceive.

The formal advice from my clinic was to avoid sex as there’s no data to say it’s safe for the baby if you got pregnant while on down reg. But I read about some cases of women getting pregnant while doing down reg and all was fine. I also found some clinics give very strict no sex advice while others don’t give that advice at all.

I spent ages googling and asking different opinions as I became obsessed with the idea that I might be missing the perfect egg, after trying every month for so long it’s hard to skip a cycle!

In the end I decided not to try as I thought I would be so anxious if I were to find out I was pregnant after taking all those drugs.
But a small part of me regrets having made that decision!

sorry that’s quite a ramble but hopefully helpful to know I had the same thought process.

@AnnieStar12 you have really summed up how I feel! I think I would have my preferred my clinic to say not to try as I would have followed the advice!

How is your IVF going? What stage are you in now? Any advice? I’m a teacher and worried how I’m going to manage it all!

@MerryBrickHelper This long protocol is my second cycle, I had about 5/6 follicles grow (I have low AMH so never expected many). I had my egg collection last Friday and sadly only got one egg retrieved. But it has made it to blastocyst stage and I am currently at the clinic waiting for it to be transferred!
On my first round I did short protocol and got three eggs but only 1 blastocysts which was transferred but didn’t work.

Good luck getting started and making a decision about whether or not to try this month. As I said above, I found lots of conflicting information out there so you’ll have to do whatever feels more right for you.
