Can you ovulate before a Hycosy/HSG?!

Hi all - I am meant to have a Hycosy on Tuesday (CD12) - I am CD10 today. I normally ovulate around CD15 - I have 30/31/32 day cycles - but decided to do an OPK this afternoon because I’ve had abdominal twinges similar to ovulation pain. Anyway my OPK is a LOT darker than expected; it’s not the darkest line I’ve ever seen but DH agrees it’s as dark as the control line. I’m now worried I’m going to ovulate before the procedure on Tuesday morning. Will they still do the Hycosy? If so, will it not just flush the egg out and have I potentially wasted another month? 😔 might just ring the clinic tomorrow but any thoughts much appreciated…

There is no reason to not have but yes if you've already ovulated it will affect chance of conception I think. The only time you can't have it is when on your period as far as I understand. But they tend to do earlier in the cycle to avoid ovulation. I was either ovulating or had just ovulated the day I had mine.

Hi @SErunner thanks for replying. I just feel frustrated as part of the reason for wanting to do this is to hopefully give myself a bit of a fertility boost as apparently a Hycosy can increase your chance of pregnancy as it can unclog your tubes / flush out any ‘debris’, and so I feel like if I ovulate early I’m gonna waste that opportunity!

Studies show increased rates of conception up to 3 months post HyCoSy. They don't know why. Yes it would be annoying, but scheduling fertility things can always be a challenge! Up to you really I suppose.

Hey! I’m so glad I stumbled across this thread because I’m in the same position as you! I’ve got my hsg tomorrow (CD 11) and this morning I got a static smiley (positive) on the clearblue OPK!! As far as I can tell, I can still go ahead with the procedure, it will just mean it’s a wasted cycle for us 😩 absolutely gutted! I hope it all goes well for you today, please can you keep me updated? X

Hi @Seasidegirll - so I had my Hycosy done this morning; I had the ultrasound scan first and the lady said I hadn’t actually ovulated yet and that the follicle suggests I will do in the next couple of days, so rather confused by the positive OPK! I have heard that you can have multiple LH surges in a cycle, and that an LH surge doesn’t mean you will ovulate straight away but in the next couple of days, so hopefully that is the case for you! She also said if I had ovulated I could still have the procedure but yes it would have flushed the egg out; tbh I hear very mixed things - some people say the month of your Hycosy the dye might affect implantation anyway, so if you have already ovulated try not to be too disheartened! Let me know if you have any questions about the procedure x

Hi @hopingforapeainapod! Thanks for replying, glad the scan showed you hadn’t ovulated yet. Fingers crossed that you are one of the lucky ones that conceives straightaway following a hsg. I don’t think I’ll be as lucky, my hsg isn’t until late tomorrow afternoon, so pretty confident I would have ovulated by then unfortunately but good to know it will still go ahead. How did you find the actual procedure? I’ve read mix things about how painful/uncomfortable it can be!

@Seasidegirll it wasn't pleasant but it was really not the horror story I thought it might be! I was very anxious beforehand and took 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen which I would definitely recommend. The speculum and catheter were actually absolutely fine, when they put the balloon in there was some cramping and I had to really focus on my breathing, and then I'm not going to lie the dye going through was pretty intense - like bad period cramps back to back - and just as I thought it was getting to be too much they were like right it's over! I felt a little faint afterwards and they said I had gone very pale (I have naturally very low blood pressure but apparently this is also quite common, something about dilating your cervix stimulating your vagus nerve) so they gave me some orange juice and then I felt fine, so maybe have a chocolate bar or something on hand afterwards! Having 2 people in the room with you really helps, because whilst one of them is doing the procedure the other one can ask you lots of questions and try and distract you a bit / check in. Best of luck for tomorrow, will hopefully all be worth it to finally get a bfp! x

@Seasidegirll sorry I know this thread is old however I have my hycosy on cycle day 11 which is beginning of next week! Sometimes I get a Static smiley between 11-14 days! I’m also now panicking it might affect my chances that month incase I ovulate on cd 11 and when I read everywhere it really increases your chances!! How did it end for you if you don’t mind me asking, did you ovulate before the test ? Did you get your bfp
