Guys NHS IVF and BMI

Hi. I am about to start IVF at Guys, have funding confirmed, but am about to have my initial consultation. Im a couple of lbs over where I need to be. I have heard some hospitals checking weights at every appointment. So far they have only taken my word over the phone.

Anyone that has had NHS funded treatment - How strict are they with BMI and checking your weight?

My friend was in the same situation. Her bmi had to be at 30 before they would start the treatment. Are you aware what yours is xx

I'm about to go through referral (different area) and I'm wondering about my husband's bmi. I can't find any guidance on whether or not the male partner's bmi is a blocker.

In this area it states the woman has to be under 29, but he's hovering at just over 30.

They’ve only physically checked my weight once out of two appointments so far at Guy’s. The last appointment and an email request for info has just been my word on it.

also, they’ve never requested or checked my partners weight or height.

I'm with them too, starting treatment this week. My BMI was too low when we wanted to start treatment (they weighed me back in July). They wouldn't start me until I met the normal BMI range, as my weight disqualified me from NHS funding.

They checked my bmi at every appointment up until I started the injections. They were really strict.

Thanks everyone.

@JadeAC did they actually weigh you at every appointment?

Yeah they did me. I lost the required 3 and a half stone to get under 30 bmi and then each time I went they would weigh me before I saw the doctor. I had no more weigh Ins from when I started my injections.

From my experience, my NHS board were initially very strict, they weighed me at pretty much every appointment and before every transfer even though the collection had already taken place some months before as we were using frozen embryos some of the time. My partner was only weighed twice, this was at each sign off stage (we were entitled to 2 rounds on the NHS)
On my second transfer (frozen embryo from first collection) they asked to weigh me and said I couldn't proceed at that time as was over the BMI limit. I had suffered a miscarriage 2 months before so clearly that hadn't helped my weight, I expressed my disgust in this and pretty much walked out. I never behave that way and was probably a little harsh but after the trauma of the previous few months I felt this was another road block for me. I felt it was unfair to refuse treatment for just a few pounds over and after months of IVF treatment/pregnancy then a miscarriage obviously my weight wasn't going to be the same as it was months before at the initial weigh in.
I cried all the way home, my partner called them and firmly but politely put our point across, the nurse who had seen us said she would speak to management about it. The next day I had a call to say that the management had made a decision that once you have been weighed and signed off that there would be no further weigh ins. I assume this is not the procedure at all clinics. After that they never weighed me again.
Good luck on your journey, its a tough road but so worth the pain and tears when you get your little bundle of joy at the end of it :)

@JNG18 how is your IVf journey going ? When you met the bmi of 30 did they keep weighing you ? I have just got to 30 to be accepted for the referral I’m worried I might not be that all the time x

JadeAC · 15/02/2024 23:19

@CEllenx they weighed me at every appointment even after I was accepted. They stopped weighing me once I started the injections.
