Supplements - It starts with an egg

Hi all,

I have just read this book and am changing some of my supplements. I am struggling to find a pre-natal that has 800mcg of methylfolate. I can see this is available on it's own but wanted to see if I could find it in a prenatal.

Has anyone had any joy?

I have been using a supplement called ovum which has a lot of the supplements in ISWTE. I just added extra ubiquinol and omega 3.

Ah thanks I hadn't seen that one. Was trying to find some that didn't require lots of tablets as am taking a few.
Did you get Melatonin too?

Yes, forgot about that! I ordered it online from Dr Fox.

Hi, this is useful to know thanks. I was previously taking Ovum but moved onto Zita West - I haven’t been feeling great taking it recently. It requires so many tablets, is super expensive and makes me very bloated so I was thinking of switching back. I didn’t know about the additional supplements alongside. I googled Melatonin and it talks about taking it for jet lag, I haven’t read the book but would be interested to know what it helps with in fertility terms…do you know?

MoonlightDreamer · 07/09/2023 11:46

I haven't found any pre natals that exceed 400. I think that's because its probably the recommended most studied amount.
I've found contradicting studies.
Some studies have shown a postive effects of increasing folic acid for some conditions while for others it can have a negative effect consuming too much.
As for melatonin. I was looking for it a few nights ago but I haven't been able to find it in the UK. Apparently it can't be legally sold here .. other than for prescription only use

Barbs3116 · 07/09/2023 13:30

Thanks @MoonlightDreamer do you mind me asking what you’re taking? It sounds like you’ve done a lot of great research on the topic!

kirstysmbc · 07/09/2023 14:28

@MoonlightDreamer I ordered melatonin online and just had to tick a box saying it was for jet lag. No idea whether it had an impact on egg quality (retrieval was on Monday) but it had no side effects. I didn't feel too bad about lying on the prescription form...

MoonlightDreamer · 08/09/2023 12:43

@Barbs3116 Ah my supplements regime is a bit extreme 😆 I take

Body biotic
Myo inositol ( with added folic)
Alpha lipoic acid
Q10
Royal Jelly
MSM
Superfood blend
EPO
Acai berry
Ginger
Collagen
Vitamin d with k2

Then I'll take a multi vit.
I alternate between Proceive sachets
and on the days I'm not taking proceive I take terranova pre natal, extra magnesium , extra vit c and NAC.

Other half takes just proceive.
I have pcos and he has morphology issues. Were late 30s.

I've seen you can order a melatonin prescription off label for jetlag . I'd be very tempted but I'm quite cautious ordering medication from online. I'd worry that its not genuine .
I've been thinking of taking h5tp which you can easily get. It increases seratonin which in turn converts into melatonin while you sleep. Theoretically it makes sense right? Apparently zita west recommends taking seratonin.

@MoonlightDreamer wow that’s some list! I thought I was doing quite well on being clued up on supplements but your knowledge is next level! That’s really helpful, thanks. I’m going to do some research. Proceive I liked before (it didn’t give me any bad reactions) but I’m fickle and decided to switch to Ovum and then Zita West. Who knows!! I’m mid 30s and at the point of trying just about anything. Best of luck with your journey x

MoonlightDreamer · 08/09/2023 14:48

Oh and I take Omega 3 also. I think that's one of those most important things to take. DHA is vital to support egg quality.
The Royal Jelly and Acai berry are new additions this month. I'm due to start IVF next month and the studies in the past few years on ACAI improving egg quality and ivf outcomes in older women look promising.
Apparently it takes 3 to 5 months for an egg cycle though so I doubt what I'm doing now will have much benefit but I think I'd rather feel like im still doing something to support my egg quality than nothing

Barbs3116 · 08/09/2023 17:56

@MoonlightDreamer totally agree, doing something feels much better than just waiting. That’s exciting you have your treatment so soon.

I’ve made a big order (not quite as long as your list but almost) and it feels good 😊Thats great to know about açai, I’d come across it when looking at diet but hadn’t read the studies…

Have you made any changes to your diet too? Reducing alcohol and sugar intake in particular? I ask because I have such a sweet tooth and am really trying but sugar has been my hardest habit to kick.

Beequee · 28/10/2023 21:51

Has any of continued taking ovum when pregnant? Their homepage says it is not safe for pregnant women but I am not sure looking in the list of ingredients it differs from other pregnancy vitamins.

MoonlightDreamer · 28/10/2023 22:03

@Barbs3116 sorry I'd just seen your message. Yes I limited sugar as much as possible. You'd be surprised how much sugar is in everything. By the time I'd take my breakfast yogurt and granola I was already over half my sugar limit. Its insane how much sugar I must have been putting into my body with sweet treats.

It might be to do with the actually doses of the vitamins as opposed to the vitamins themselves
