Painkillers during stims?

Hi all,

We're having our first (and only as it's all we can afford!) round of IVF this month. We're going through a clinic in Ireland due to high BMI. I started stims last night on the first day of my period.

My periods are excruciatingly painful, and I can't believe it, but I forgot to ask about which painkillers I can take. I'm trying to do it with paracetamol alone because the internet says ibuprofen or any NSAIDS can interfere with ovulation- however, as I'm currently on my period I sort think that shouldn't be a problem?

After a night of no sleep due to vomiting and nausea due the pain I'm at my wits end. 111 didn't know and said to go to A&E if it's that bad, but we've also been told by our local hospital not to attend unless it's life or limb.

My clinic is closed and uncontactable over the weekend.

Does anybody have any knowledge on this subject? Many thanks in advance.

You can take paracetamol + codeine during stims (that’s what the nurses advised me for pain relief). They don’t advise to take any NSAIDs during the cycle. That’s weird your clinic doesn’t have an emergency number/can contact them at weekends!

Thanks for that. Codeine makes me vomit but at this point I'm vomiting anyway so I might as well go with it!

We contact our clinic via online portal- I'll see if they have an emergency contact or anything anywhere though.

Thanks for the reply xx

@Ilovewheelychairs i would be concerned if they don’t, as they should as during fertility treatment there can be serious side effects (obviously not many people get them but you should have an emergency contact). My clinic had a consultant on call as emergency contact and if not emergency nurses line which was open every day. Definitely check paperwork to see if another way to contact! Plus what happens if you collection/transfer/scans ends up over the weekend?

They adjust so it doesn't happen over the weekend as far as I can tell. So for example, if my period started today, I wasn't supposed to start stims until Tuesday so my first scan aligned properly.

No emergency contact details on anything. Will try ringing the clinic because I assume they'll have an emergency contact number on the answerphone message.

@Ilovewheelychairs I was told paracetamol was absolutely fine but not to use ibuprofen x
