Hi! This is my first post. Been TTC for over a year (had 2 early miscarriages) and husband just had his second sperm test. Anyone out there able to explain the results to me, please?

Hi @AlexandraPaige! Did you get this explained to you in the end? I can help out if you haven't yet x

AlexandraPaige · 22/08/2023 11:44

Hi. Not yet, no. That would be great. Thank you!

No problem!

So a semen analysis is mainly looking for:

  • The number of sperm in a sample (density)
  • How well the sperm are moving (motility)
  • What they look like (morphology)

From these results, the sample has:

  • A total motility of 51% (so 51% are moving well)
  • 4% of the sperm are moving, but on the spot, and not in a forward direction.
  • 45% of the sperm are not moving at all (immotile)

For some reason they have reported the number of sperm in the sample per nano litre rather than per ml (which is standard practice). The motility is normal but it's tricky to comment on the density unless is converted to ml and there is not a result for morphology.

Was this analysis performed by a computer instead of a human by any chance?

Thank you. That's really kind of you to interpret that for me!

I've literally just found out that morphology was 1% 😔

Feeling quite down now.

You're welcome!
I am sorry to hear about the morphology. I know his distressing and upsetting it can be.

Try not to loose hope though. The fact that you have been pregnant two times means that a lot of the key steps are working. The sperm and the egg can fertilise, make a good quality embryo and implant in your uterus - which is amazing! You just need the right egg and sperm to come together.

If you ever decide to venture down the IVF route, a technique called ICSI will over come the poor morphology. And if the density and motility are good, there will be plenty of normal sperm to choose from :)

@Jellyfish1956 hi, is there any chance you'd be able to explain my partners recent test please?

Jellyfish1956 · 05/12/2023 15:23

Hi @Angelselevenx
I can try my best! Can you post the results?

TTCnumber1x · 05/12/2023 15:28

@Jellyfish1956 thank you I think I've worked it out as the below. So it's just under the 4% morphology.

Volume 2.4ml
Sperm count 78million/ml
Progressively moving 61%
Morphology 3% which is just under the 4%.

Doctor isn’t worried or concerned but we want to increase it. He’s started wellman conception supplements and introducing more veggies into his diet. He already exercises regularly x
