IVF Referral Question

Hi Ladies,

Just a question about getting an IVF referral in UK. Can a private doctor refer you to NHS IVF or does it all have to be done via NHS?

Bit of background, I have been referred to a Gynaecologist by my GP last year. Only just got a date which isn't until next year!

We previously went private for tests to check ovulation and had lap&dye and all good there. DH has had sperm analysis also all good. However, we no longer have private healthcare.

I mentally don't think I can wait until January to see a Gynaecologist to do all the bloods again, then still have to go through the process of being referred for IVF and all the waiting for that. So was hoping I could pay to see the private gynaecologist again, and ask them to refer me straight to NHS IVF. Or could my GP do this anyway without seeing a Gynaecologist?

I'm so lost, confused and sad!

I think your GP will need to refer you to the NHS fertility clinic. Can you ask them to do that while awaiting the Gynae appt? At least you have both parts moving along then? What have you been referred to Gynae for?

Thanks for responding 🙂
I was having lower abdominal pain as well as not conceiving so they thought I may have endo. Turned out it was my appendix fused to my pelvic wall causing all my pain, which was discovered during the lap&dye I had privately.
I have reached back out to the private doctors to see if they can send my GP a letter requesting they refer me. Just waiting to hear back from them, as GP wouldn't do anything when I called earlier! Just said go back to private doctor lol. If I could afford that I would but alas!

Hi @missmoosh I was referred to the NHS Fertility ward in Manchester by a private gyne consultant who I did my scans and bloods with so yes they can refer, you don't need to go to your GP.
