IVF with low AMH at 39

Hi all,

I posted on conception but it was suggested I moved it here instead. We've just been accepted by a fertility clinic in Ireland for IVF. My husbands sperm count is all good, but sadly my AMH is low (3.21) and they only found 3 follicles in my ovaries. We still want to try because we've been TTC our much wanted baby for almost 6 years now and this feels like our final chance- I'm 39 soon. But has anyone out there got experience of IVF with such low numbers? Am so trying not to get my hopes up but it feels like our only option and when you're putting everything into the process mentally, physically and financially, it's so hard!

Not me but someone I know had success with very low AMH at age 35. She read the book 'it starts with the egg' in case that's of any interest

@Ilovewheelychairs I'm nearly 38 - been trying to conceive for 8 years, had 3 ivf and eventually succeed - currently nearly 15 weeks pregnant! My amh 5 years ago was over 8 and before this ivf dropped massively down to 1.8! Remember you only need 1 embryo at the end of of the cycle!!! Good luck 💕

Congratulations Alison! I think the problem is, at £10k a pop when you include meds and travel, we only really have this one chance. It just seems vanishingly small that we are ever going to be parents.

Hi @Ilovewheelychairs I'm in Ireland and had one child from my early 30s. I failed to conceive again for a second child. Got amh measured about the age of 40 and it was 3. We kind of gave up. Amazingly, i conceived last year at 41 naturally and just had a baby. Not sure what was different but I had a smear just before I conceived, was taking pregnacare beforehand and had more sex than usual. Don't know if that is of any use to you but thought I would share. It's not necessarily over. We had looked at IVF but decided it was too expensive.

So I was concerned about my AMH dropping rapidly and mentioned this to my consultant who said people get her up about it but from a clinical perspective they use it to help them decide what protocol to use and how well someone is likely to respond to treatment (so women with normal/high AHM are at risk of being overstimulated, while those with low AMH need a bigger dose to make sure they respond). Good luck.
