How bad is it going to be?

Husband and myself have been ttc for over a year now, and I've been referred for a hysterosalpingpogram.. now the walk through of the procedure says it doesn't hurt. But my experience of coils in/out, the description of the procedure, and knowledge of the minimisation/underplaying of pain in women's gynae procedures has me pretty worked up... so I guess just give me the unsweetened truth, please..!?! Xx

@DefinitelyNotNormal I think it really depends on your body, the technician and also your sensitivity to pain.

I assumed it was going to be much worse than it was. For me it was not a pleasant experience but I felt more so pressure as the liquid is flowing up but I wasn’t in any pain. The only thing is that I did have a small bit of spotting afterwards. But I think if you prepare yourself for the worst hopefully it won’t be too bad in comparison.

Wishing you a short and smooth fertility journey ❤️

Hi OP, I have had basically every gynaecological procedure going (thanks to endo, HPV and infertility) and the HSG wasn’t that bad. For reference the insertion of my IUD was the most blinding pain I’ve ever experienced. HSG was ok, but I did take a pain killer beforehand.
Agree with the poster above, everyone is different. The doctor who did my HSG was lovely and very reassuring. I’m pretty sure gyne who did my IUD moonlights as a demon barber on Fleet Street.
