Poor egg retrieval results today :(

Hi all,

First IVF cycle, egg collection today
Age: 32
AMH: 28 pmol/l

I was on low dose stims as think they were trying to prevent overstimulation, but I only had 9 eggs collected this morning, of which 7-8 are mature, 1 poor quality. The doctor seemed okay and said it was a good number and better to have fewer higher quality eggs, but..

I really was expecting more. There were around 15 follicles on my day 7 and day 9 scans and then around 11 follicles on my day 11 scan here in Brno, but that scan was really rushed and he said there were likely to be more.

I can’t help but feel gutted. Really nervous about the drop off over the next few days and just worried we will have nothing.

We have opted for PICSI/MFSS and the Geri incubator due to male factor (low count etc).

I know everyone’s journey is so personal but would appreciate any comfort or words of wisdom!

Thank you x

I wouldn't worry as some people have only 3 eggs and have embryo they need.. as they say you only need 1 ;) so head up

This is a good result, I've had 8 eggs of which 7 mature and 1 embryo which resulted in BFP and 1 frozen. My clinic keep saying they want quality over quantity:)

AlisonDanuta · 12/04/2023 12:51

To add my first round was only 3 eggs - 2 mature - none made it to day 5! Then 2nd cycle 6 mature eggs and 3 fertilised and bad quality.. so positive thinking as you never know what's around the corner :)

HopefulHead · 12/04/2023 15:07

I had 15 follicles too and only 7 eggs retrieved. We ended up with 4 day 6 blasts. So try not to be too down hearted about 9 eggs, it is still an amazing amount and your chances of getting a few good embryos from that is high! 🤞🏼

whomoon · 12/04/2023 16:25

At 32, there’s a good chance most will be good quality, so in this case, it really is a case of quality of quantity!

I had my egg collection at 36, 14 collected, all mature, 10 fertilised, but only 2 made to day 5.
so numbers really don’t matter, it’s what makes it to day 5 that’s important.

@whatajourney23 i had a very similar number of follicles and mature eggs collected to you and I was quite deflated by it as I had expected more but I ended up with 6 day 5 blasts, all good quality - my first fet failed (even though I didn’t get a huge amount of eggs they still thought I was at too high a risk of OHSS to do a fresh transfer) but I’m trying again now

Z9810 · 12/04/2023 17:01

Did u do frozen embryo transfer or fresh what was ur embryo grade

Jessicano9 · 12/04/2023 21:01

Hi , just to make you feeel a little less anxious I had my egg retrieval I’m only 31 and I only had three eggs and one made it to embryo… I am now waiting to do the test and it’s making me feel awful the wait feels like forever.. but remain positive:)

Sorry about that... I tagged the wrong person and posted mistakenly!

I totally understand your disappointment @whatajourney23 , but @whomoon is right: it's the results on Day 5 that count.

First round we had 8 eggs, all fertilised, only one really blastocyst on Day 5, transferred and BFN.
Second round only 6 eggs, I was really disappointed, but 3 good quality blastocysts... One is my son and 2 more frozen. You just never know.

Very best of luck to you over the next few days. The wait for updates is tough but you can do it 🙂 x

HopefulHead · 14/04/2023 12:46

@whatajourney23 Just sending lots of love and positivity for your 3 day update 🤞🏼

NorthernDuckling · 14/04/2023 13:45

@whatajourney23 i had 18 follicles, 9 eggs, 7 fertilised and got 5 blasts (one not suitable for freezing) just had a BFP this morning so don’t worry about low numbers. My clinic was the same worrying about overstimulating so I was on a really low dose too.

Imisscoffee2021 · 16/04/2023 11:22

I had 7 eggs retrieved, all fertilised and we got 6 good and top quality blasts from them with severe male factor infertility due to a varicocele! I was disappointed on the day too as my AFC had been 11 but I'm now 27 weeks pregnant from the 2nd transfer (fresh failed but first frozen one worked). Hope your day 3 update was good news :)

whatajourney23 · 20/04/2023 18:08

Hi all,

Sorry for the delayed response!

We ended up with: 9 collected, 7 mature, 7 fertilised and then 5 blasts. We had a fresh transfer on Monday and 4 frozen. Just hoping for the best now!

What a long wait. Thanks for the lovely messages and support. Hope you are all doing ok? X

Hey @whatajourney23 Thats great results 😃 and 4 in the freezer too is amazing!
Keeping fingers crossed that your fresh embryo was a sticky one 😍

EggFreezing36 · 16/06/2023 18:00

First off, I would say that I don't think 7-8 eggs is terrible? I think that seems decent to me, so I hope you can not worry too much!

But I do think for your AMH it's a bit surprising as I got 6 eggs (8 frozen) and my AMH is 5.4 pmol.

There is just so much conflicting and confusing information out there re low stim, high stim etc. It's a minefield really.

When you mention 1 was low quality, I was always told they cannot test quality until you go to fertilise. Did they tell you that they can tell quality now?

Wednesdaysotherchild · 17/06/2023 01:41

Hah, quality not quantity - in 5 rounds, I’ve had 8, 10, 11, 12, and 3 eggs retrieved. We’ve had 6, 4, 8, 3 fertilise. We’ve always had two blasts to freeze no matter what the numbets.

The best 2 embryos came from the 3 egg round! The other best grades came from the round in which only 4/10 fertilised.

New to Mumsnet…
30 years old and going through ivf for first time. Been trying several years but not caught on due to pcos.
I had my egg retrieval for the first time so just wondering if anyone has had similar numbers to me and what the outcome was.
They collected 38 eggs and 32 have fertilised, I’m still waiting to see how many make it to blast stage.
Feeling quite bloated and pain from that but other than this I feel ok. Did anyone still end up with ohss and not have many symptoms?
