goal number of eggs OR cycles considering embryo attrition rate?

Hi all! First time poster!

I’m 33 with low AMH (3.0). I found out I was low AMH a couple years ago when I was 31, and in a panic I did three cycles of egg freezing at CRGH collecting 2 eggs the first cycle, 1 the second, and 2 the third (total 5).

This year me and my partner are batching embryos. We just did egg collection yesterday with 5 eggs retrieved (it was a surprise - that’s as many as I was able to make over my last 3 younger cycles in total!), and today we found out that 3 were fertilised. Crossing our fingers for the day 3 check in.

Looking at attrition rates expected per cycle, it just occurred to me that for each of my previous egg freezing cycles, I might be able to expect 1 viable blast from each (assuming all is good on my partners side of things). Is that right? I know the recommendation of collected eggs for egg freezing <35 is much higher than I currently have, but wouldn’t it make more sense to have a goal number of cycles instead of a goal number of eggs? At least in my scenario? Would love your thoughts!

Just came across this post, so with the normal funnel/success rates, if you have 5 eggs you should expect at least one normal embryo I think. I had a failed cycled with 4 mature eggs collected but ended up with no viable embryo, was told this was below expectation

@lilChansey This is a really really impossible question to answer, as some people will have few eggs that will do very well, and others can have a much higher number of eggs collected but a higher attrition rate.

I’ve normal amh but respond poorly for reasons not really understood to ivf drugs. First cycle we only got 2 eggs but both made it to high grade day 5 blasts. 1 fresh transfer bfn and 1 FET that was a chemical. Next cycle we changed protocols and modified things a bit and got 6 eggs all fertilised and we’re alive at day 5 but only 3 were suitable for freezing (Did a freeze all cycle). First FET is my DD and the second FET is my current pregnancy.

Weve done really well with low egg numbers (all eggs have always fertilised, they’ve all made it to day 5, and 5/8 made blasts suitable for transfer but you just don’t know if you’ll be lucky or not.

One thing that was said to me was even though I didn’t make many eggs, being younger your eggs are more likely to be of viable quality.

mid be tempted to defrost the eggs you’ve collected and see what happens and then you know what you have to work with. Your other consideration needs to be if you potentially want a sibling in the future, as I would imagine you’d have higher success making more embryos now.

Best of luck!

@lilChansey You also need to consider that eggs are much more likely not to survive a defrost than an embryo is, so you wouldn’t expect al 5 of your frozen eggs to survive the thaw x
