Pregnancy after recurrent miscarriages- 5mg folic acid

Hi

I’m currently 4wks 5days pregnant after having 4 miscarriages and no successful pregnancies. I have been prescribed a months worth of progesterone pessaries along with 5mg folic acid.
I have been taking a prenatal vitamin every day with the recommended dose of folic acid and I’m unsure if I should continue with it if I’ve been given 5mg folic acid. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?
I’ve been reading about taking too much of it can cause a higher chance of autism and other things which I obviously do not wish to contribute to

So sorry to hear of your losses. I think the best person to answer your question is your prescriber but hopefully others can share their experience. In some countries the 5mg folic acid is pretty standard for all pregnant women. The amount in UK conception vitamins is about one twelfth that strength. If there is other stuff in the conception vitamins that you want to continue without the additional folic acid maybe you could buy those as separate vitamins. In any case I do hope this pregnancy progresses smoothly.

@Katr960 I’ve never heard taking it can cause autism and I’m pretty sure I was on a high dose, I took folate though so not sure if it’s different. Google says 1,000 micrograms of folic acid a day, unless your doctor prescribes a higher amount. If it’s been prescribed then suggest just asking your clinic.
Also, with several mcs, i would suggest Gorgy or dr Shehata and reviewing posts about immune issues.
best of luck with this pregnancy op

Hi @Katr960 did you ever get an answer regarding the folic acid? Similar thing has happened to me xx

Hi! I am in the same boat and had the same question been prescribed 5mg folic acid. My parental vitamin include 800micrograms of it. I sent it to my concultant and he said its fine. I also double checked with pharmacy and they also said is fine, as we ger folic acid from other food daily anyways.

@GH9687 Hi, I haven’t asked anyone yet as it’s been a nightmare trying to communicate with the gynae team who prescribed me these. I have continued taking the prenatal vitamin along with the 5mg dose of folic acid because 400ug is hardly anything on top. I will be asking soon though as I need to get in touch for another prescription as I’ve only had a month’s worth

@Rutak Thanks, yes I did have a long think about it and decided that the dosage in a prenatal vitamin is hardly anything compared to the 5mg dose. So I have continued taking both.

I did query it when I went back for a 2nd scan and she said it might have been to do with my bmi (seems odd to have such an increase in dose when my bmi is only slightly raised) but I've read a lot on other people being prescribed 5mg when prescribed progesterone so I don't know if it's just standard. I wish I'd queried it further when I was there at 5mg just seems like a really big dose. I do have my booking appointment on Thursday so I think I'll ask then!
