Hello

Please be patient because I'm really new to IVF. Here's a bit about me. I'm 33 and been ttc for a few years now. Last year I fell pregnant naturally but ended in a silent miscarriage. Me and my husband have had some tests. My womb etc looks healthy counted 8 folicles on the left and 1 on the right which isn't the best. Today I had my blood tests back to say my egg count is on the low 3 to be exact. This is where my stupid question comes in. If I have those 3 eggs taken out that means I won't produce anymore each month? So really I have 1 or 3 shots to get pregnant?

Hi! Do you mean your AMH IS 3? That doesn't indicate an exact egg count, it's more a sign of what egg reserves you do have, which is on the low side but still workable with IVF :) good luck, I did a round last year so know how nerve wracking it is and what an information overload!

@Imisscoffee2021 yes that's it. So that doesn't mean if I have 3 eggs and they have been collected that's it? I just feel so overwhelmed I don't know anyone that has had IVF to ask. When I spoke to the consultant I didn't know what questions to ask. Thanks for replying x

No you will have more than 3 eggs, it's just the hormonal level to indicate what potential reserves you have. As they said at your age it is on the low side and may be the reason you have struggled to conceive. They will tailor a protocol to you based on that and your follicle count, to try and get as many mature eggs in follicles as possible :) if you have other questions do ask as it's all still fresh in my mind, I'm 22 weeks pregnant with a little boy from my IVF round in August so know it can have such amazing rewards too!

@Imisscoffee2021 phew I was panicking. Thank you so much. When it's all done over the phone it can be difficult to take all the information in. I do have another silly question. If they did take 3 eggs for example and first egg wasn't viable do they use the other 2 for it to be classed as 1 round? Huge congratulations to you. Is this your first? I've stupidly been holding off for years because it terrifys me x

So all mature eggs they collect (some may be immature and therefore non viable) will be placed with DHs sperm or injected if you have ICSI (I had this due to make factor infertility but if your husband's semen parameters came back normal they probably won't). The next day the embryologist checks and sees how many fertiliser. They give you a call to let you know, not all do however sometimes. Then they culture the for 5 days, wanting them to reach blastocyst stage which is the time in a natural conception the embryo would be reaching the uterus from the fallopian tube and hopefully implanting into the uterus. The best blastocyst they will transfer back into you so it can hopefully implant. Some clinics do day 3 transfers depending how the embryos are developing. Any other blastocysts on day 5 will be frozen. That's all one round, it's not by egg but by egg collection. Depending on NHS and clinic some include all your embryos, even frozen, in one round, and will transfer them all until you are pregnant or run out, and some only do one fresh transfer and one frozen, really depends. I had a fresh transfer of a top quality blastocyst and it didn't take but the first frozen one did implant, but it was all embryos from same round:) I still have 4 frozen. Yes it's my first, I waited til 33 too but found out within 8 months my husband's sperm wouldn't enable us to conceive naturally so went to IVF quickly, and privately to save time! I just turned 35 so a few years behind where we planned but hey ho :)

@Imisscoffee2021 totally understand. I feel so much more hopeful and positive now. My husband is fine, just something to do with the shape which he can improve with exercise and supplements. We're going privately too.

Definitely get on supplements now for morphology, the more healthy sperm the better :) my husband's issue was a varicocele which couldn't be surgically fixed so he went all out on supplements, no caffeine no alcohol and no hot baths to try and get what swimmers there were nice and healthy, and it did the trick as we had 7 eggs collected, all fertilised and all made it to healthy blastocysts stage. Hope it all goes well for you and fast as you're private, and don't feel silly asking your clinic questions or calling back if you think of another, they're there to help :)

@Imisscoffee2021 - hi, do you mind me asking how old are you. I have 8 out 12 fertilised (12/18 thaw) and terribly worries about the blast rate. Will only know my result next week. Thank you so much,.

Imisscoffee2021 · 11/03/2023 07:34

@aCupOfTeaSunday I was 34 when I did my round, I was terrified of the rate of attrition too, dna fragmentation etc because of my husband's varicocele. Fingers crossed for your 8, hope the wait isn't too agonizing! X
