Stopping Projesterone at 7 weeks?

Hi,
I have recently had a fresh IVF cycle. I have been taking Utrogestan x3 daily and due to lack of supply they have swooped me to a new projesterone. However, they want me to stop taking projesterone completely at 7 weeks. Everything I have read says to take to atleast 8 weeks- around 12 weeks. I’m only 4.5 weeks atm so still taking them I’m just worried for when the time comes. Did anyone else stop at this time and have success?

No, my clinic keep up the progesterone until 12 weeks. Obviously I don't know if the outcome would have been different without the progesterone but it's so cheap relative to the cost of the cycle that they have no reason to tell people to stop sooner (unless a shortage and it can't be sourced). Can you speak to them about a different progesterone product, or tapering down the dosage.

I took it til 12 weeks too, everything online says placenta starts to function between 8 and 12 weeks and my clinics info tallied with that. They also said because of egg collection or FET meds often there are is no corpus luteum to produce progesterone so supplementation is essential. They like patients to go 12 weeks to make absolutely sure that the placenta is fully taking over hormone production before taking us off progesterone, and in fact I tapered mine off alowly to about 13.5 works from worry. Cyclogest isn't also running out is it?

I’ve also been advised to stop taking them from 8 weeks (I’m 8 weeks today with only 6 left) - I have however emailed the clinic this morning and asked for more until 12 weeeks because everything I’ve read it says 12 weeks and I also pay for all my meds anyway!! So I’m hoping they can give me some more, or I’ll be calling them xx

@Jayjay08 hey, I’ve had 3 FETs and the first 2 I stopped meds around 7/8 weeks and ended up miscarrying. Not sure it was related to stopping progesterone but I’ve said this time I am not stopping until at least 12 weeks. I’d try and push if you can, especially if paying for your meds. Or ask for a second opinion x

Thanks guys I new it was too early I’m just so scared of misscarying and feel 7 weeks it to early especially to just completely stop and not gradually 🙈

@Jayjay08 totally agree about the sudden stopping. It can’t be good for our bodies to have all these hormones one day and then nothing the next. See what they say about giving you more and if not speak to your gp about your concerns

Hi Lucy.. just out of curiosity, if you don’t mind me asking … had you had miscarriages before your FET? I don’t have any infertility issues myself and was wondering if this could be the reason they are stopping it so early

@Jayjay08 hi lovely- I spoke with my clinic this morning - they basically said normal protcol is for those who haven’t bled or had any previous miscarriage is to stop at 8 weeks. But as it’s my first pregnancy, I’ve advised them I am feeling anxious over the thought of stopping as I don’t know if I will miscarry or not. They were super super lovely, and have prescribed me as many boxes as I wanted lol!! I do have to pay though, but I’d rather the £60 than wondering if that would effect things!

Give your clinic a call, they’ll understand the anxiety and it does no harm In taking them for longer 🤍🤍

@Jayjay08 so I had the embryo transfers which were successful until 7/8 weeks when I miscarried

Betsyboo87 · 15/02/2023 19:21

Do you have enough to just carry on? Or speak to your clinic and say you’re anxious about it. I was told to stop cold turkey at 10 weeks but I really wasn’t comfortable with it. My Dr was fine to extend my prescription for another couple of weeks until after my 12 week scan.

I have enough to carry on until 7 weeks 6 days unless I start to only take one a day then I’ll have another week 🙈 I’m going to contact me clinic and tell them I want to continue even if it’s only one a day .. just feel stopping completely is dangerous
