IVF egg collection results

Hello! First time posting here.
So I’m in a same-sex couple and have just had my first round of egg collection on Friday, had 22 eggs collected of which 17 fertilised. By day 3 I was told 16 of those were ‘top quality’ embryos so I was feeling really hopeful for today’s day 5 update. Got the call and was told that only 5 of the 16 had made it to blastocyst, and none had particular good grades based on what I’ve seen online (5BB, 3BB, 4BC, 4CB-x2). They also said that the other 11 were early blastocyst so have left them to see if they’ll grow any more by tomorrow and will update, fingers crossed for some more.
I just feel a little bit baffled as to how so many of these ‘top quality’ embryos at day 3 can only result in relatively quite few blastocysts and none of them being top quality at that stage? I wonder if anything went wrong, something was wrong with my eggs or they just weren’t destined to be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I didn’t really get much from the clinic!

Thanks 😊

The numbers you have are pretty damn good really OP - I wish clinics would be more honest about expectations during IVF - it's actually the exception rather than norm to have loads of embryos to freeze

Doesn't sound like an egg issue - you had great fertilisation rates and great numbers on day 3. There is some evidence sperm quality takes over on day 3 and ultimately dictates what makes it to blastocyst but not all doctors agree with that

The fact you could have 11 blastocysts on day 6 is amazing - day 6 are just as good so long as they are frozen and transferred back as a day 5 - one of my twins is a day 6

@mybunniesandme ah thank you for your reply! I feel pretty clueless about it all really despite having lived on Google for quite some time 🤣 I think I did just expect higher numbers than 5 purely because I was so shocked at how many eggs I had and how many had fertilised so it’s reassuring to hear that high blasts isn’t actually that common. Fingers crossed we get some more today but I’m not getting my hopes up!
Thanks again 😊 x

My clinic told me not to worry about the grades, it was for their reference really rather than mine and anything good enough to put back/freeze was good enough to make a baby.

We managed to get 3 day 5 blastocysts to freeze (4BB, 3BB and 3BB) and I’m 6 weeks pregnant with my 4BB blast now. It does only take one.

Little update: another little blast sneakily made it through yesterday and 3 more today! The new ones were a 4CB and the others were CCs but that makes 9 in total so I’m pleased with that!! 😊😊
