Taking Misoprostol for missed miscarriage- is it sore ?

Hi all, have found out baby stopped growing at around 9 weeks .. I am not 10+4 .have opted for the tablet misoprostol but not sure whether to just wait and see if it passed naturally instead.

has anyone taken the tablet and how was it for you ?

also has anyone waited and how long did it take to pass naturally?

Any advice would be really appreciated as feeling so confused at what to do.

thanks

Hi Op,

i am so sorry this has happened to you. My own experience was horrendous and certainly wouldn’t be an advocate for the tablets especially at your stage. Firstly it’s painful, not just period pain, I mean 6 paracetamol wouldn’t even take the edge off. I ended up with clots getting stuck in the cervix also which is excruciating. I took the tablets at 12 lunch and I was in a&e by 3. They never tell you how sore it is.

in the end 2 weeks later I still had a uterus full of clots and the sac was there so I ended up having a d&c.

sorry if this alarms you. I hope it works out xxx

Hi, thanks for sharing your honest experience, I have read else where it is really sore .. think I will wait just now and maybes opt for the D&C

Hi @hopefullsosbry , so sorry you are going through this. I remember this decision being really hard and so I wanted to share my experience. I think ultimately there is no way to know how you will personally respond to either route. Everyone is so different and its best to try to prepare yourself to know, and just wait and see, if that makes sense.
For me, I had the vaginal tablets (I assume the same as you are talking about?) at about lunchtime and by the early evening was having pretty intense cramps and heavy bleeding. I just took ibuprofen and paracetamol during this time and for me it was more painful than a period, but manageable. I was prescribed codeine but didn't take it. The main part of the miscarriage happened that evening. I think its important to be prepared to pass the sac which wasn't any more painful for me than the cramps, but it was quite a shock to see. For me unfortunately I had on off bleeding for a few months after before my cycle returned to normal but I'm told that's not that common and most people's cycle comes back normally sooner.
Someone else I know have let it pass naturally and I think the pain is not necessarily that different, you will have cramps either way and will need to rest. The tablets at least give you some control of when it happens.
There's no right or wrong thing to do, and its so hard making decisions in these circumstances. All the best x

I agree with the ladies above that it's impossible to know how each individual is affected by the misoprostol and it's really hard to know what to do for the best. I found out I'd had an MMC at pretty much the same stage as you have, but I knew my mental health couldn't cope with waiting for the MC to happen naturally. I did 2 days of misoprostol in hospital (I didn't want the MC to happen at home) and it had very little effect on me. Benefit of doing it in hospital also meant that I was in the right place to then opt for surgical management and have it carried out as soon as a slot came up (which was the same day). The surgical management only took maybe 2 weeks to physically recover from, but the hormone crash was brutal and I couldn't stop crying for 7 weeks. I'd definitely recommend getting in touch with your clinic and asking for an appointment with the counsellor (mine did this urgently due to the miscarriage and got an appointment within a week). It helped to have a safe place to process what I'd been through. I'm sorry you're going through this.x

Thanks so much for sharing, I am really scared to take the tablet I am still undecided , I have had sone brown when I wipe today and mild cramps so hopefully it will go itself soon ? Think I’ll wait the two weeks, then decide .. thanks again everyone for advice, it’s a horrible decision. Xxx
