did progesterone work after reoccurring miscarriage?

I had 1x chemical pregnancy at 5 weeks… then got pregnant 2 weeks after and had the smoothest pregnancy resulting in my beautiful 3 year old. In May this year we started trying, I got pregnant instantly and naively thought I’d have another smooth pregnancy. But no, in July At 10 weeks I had a MMC. Then in September I got pregnant again, didn’t think I’d have another miscarriage but unfortunately I had another MMC this week at 10 weeks again measuring 6 weeks. The EPU said even though I had 1x chemical + 2 reoccurring miscarriages they would count me as 3x reoccurring miscarriages so will refer me to the reoccurring miscarriage clinic thankfully. she also said when I next become pregnant I should be requested to be prescribed on progesterone. Just wondering does it actually work? Reading online there are mixed outcomes. I’m 33 years old. It’s so horrible not finding answers as to why this happened. Thanks

I had two losses (one at about 6 weeks, the other was a second trimester loss) and was prescribed progesterone for our IVF BFP - I took it for 12 weeks and the pregnancy was successful - DC arrived at term by Elective C-section.

While I can't say for sure that the progesterone was the reason, we had a good outcome! If we get any more BFPs I'll be asking for progesterone.

@Scirocco so sorry to hear, did you find out why you had a loss second trimester? So worried about 3rd try

@Doremi1689 thank you; no, we don't know why - we could have had testing, but it was more important to us to bury our little one as they were. I don't regret that - it felt like they'd gone through enough and deserved a peaceful burial process rather than medical tests, if that makes sense?

Our third BFP was our lucky one (from our only IVF cycle). The pregnancy was so nerve-wracking though. I don't think I let myself believe it would work out until DC was actually in my arms!

Along with the progesterone, I took Proceive Plus supplements every day, levothyroxine (to suppress TSH), and later on I had daily anticoagulant injections. I also cut out all caffeine, which for a coffee addict was very hard!

Good luck!

@Scirocco makes me so sad reading about the burying, I just can’t imagine the pain. I’m so sorry again

I’m sorry to ask silly questions, why did you decide to do ivf 3rd time? Is it because it took a while to conceive or is there a better chance for ivf with the third try? All I was told from the sonographer was “ask your gp to prescribe you with progesterone if you get pregnant again” which I spoke to my gp over the phone and he agreed. What is “levothyroxine (to suppress TSH), and later on I had daily anticoagulant injections” - what do these do?

We spent 6 years TTC with only one positive test (right at the start), then we got referred to fertility services and got put on the waiting list for IVF. Our 2nd loss was conceived naturally while we were on the waiting list - the clinic said to go for IVF anyway as we'd been trying so long (7 years at that point!).

Levothyroxine is a medicine that is used to treat low thyroid hormone levels, but some fertility clinics prescribe it if your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels are above a certain level, as there's some evidence that keeping TSH levels in a lower range can improve success rates in fertility patients.

Anticoagulants are medications that make it harder for your blood to clot. They're often prescribed if people have risk factors for blood clotting problems (eg deep vein thrombosis), and can be used to reduce the risks of tiny clots impairing the blood supply to a developing pregnancy.

@Scirocco thank you for explaining. I’m on the waiting list to see the reoccurring miscarriage where they’ll do tests but I know only 50% of the time they give an answer. I’m glad things worked out for you in the end and Wish you all the best x
