Has anyone taken metformin before? Pls reply xx

Hi I’ve been taking metformin for 8 weeks and this is my first period over had for 4 months,

im just worried as My period is so heavy! I can’t get in doctors until Tuesday, It’s day 8 and I’m still so heavy I’m soaking through pads within an hour even faster if I’m stood or walking I’m finding it difficult to carry on with life with it this heavy. I’ve also had very bad cramps and clots,

did anyone else experience this with their first period on metformin? Is this a good sign still?

is there anything I can do to help stop the bleeding being so heavy? Xxx

Hi @Katie2021 I've been taking metformin for 6 weeks and haven't had anything like this. But if you haven't had a period for 4 months before this, maybe it's your body's way of responding (i.e., if your uterine lining got really thick)? You could call 111 if you're worried though - it does sound like very heavy bleeding and quite distressing :( hope you're okay xx

@Katie2021 I know you posted this on Friday so I'm too late really. Are you ok? I hope the bleeding has subsided or you've seen a dr? I'm on metformin, but already had semi regular periods so can't help (as it didn't affect the flow).

@Lily1990 @seven201 hi both thanks for replying , the bleeding did eventually stop after someone recommended a day of fully resting, not getting up or going for walks as much as I could and that really seemed to help! It got much lighter and eventually stopped after that day.

I did ring the doctors anyway and she said she wants to get me in for another smear test just to make sure nothings been missed as I also had a little bleed a few weeks earlier.

but yeah I’m hoping it’s just because I hadn’t had a period for so long maybe there was more to shed like you said xxx

I've been on metformin too for five weeks and the only impact it seems to have had is to give me horrible constipation and some minor nausea.

I did have a period (50 day cycle) and it was unusually short - my periods are usually the normal 4-5 days and this lasted for 2 days. Never had a short one like that in my life, so quite literlly the opposite of your experience. I hope the next one isn't as bad and you find out what's causing it?
