First IUI - two days until period due and cramping

Hi everyone,
My husband and I have been trying for a baby for two and a half years, we're both 30, and are currently on our third round of treatment.
The first two rounds were with Clomid and timed intercourse but this round we decided to have an IUI.
My period is due in two days and I'm having quite bad cramps so I feel confident my period is coming. However, I am using progesterone suppositories and have been told these cause cramps. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I feel like I've given up this month

Hello @lydia1991 I'm not doing IUI I'm doing IVF but also on progesterone pessaries and cramping is normal.
Hope this reassures you a little before some others doing IUI come along to answer.

I am 7 days past transfer and still getting cramps- sore boobs- back pain, tiredness. And headaches. All caused by the progesterone. Good luck.

It really is, I try to distract myself as much as possible but it still doesn't help.

I am on my tww just now after my IUI two weeks ago. I’m having cramps though so I’m thinking my period is coming. How are iou feeling now?

lydia1991 · 27/07/2022 16:39

Hi @Nataliexo, I've been having that pulling sensation as well as the cramps so am 99% sure my period is coming, suspect it will come today or tomorrow. I had my bloods taken this morning to see if I'm pregnant but fear AF will arrive before I even get the results back. What date did you have the IUI? Are you scheduled for a blood test?

Hi @lydia1991 , my period isn’t due untill Sunday however I had my IUI on the 14th july and I ovulated the 15th so im thinking they’ll maybe come slightly early this month due to ovulation being on my day 12. I have been getting cramps all day yesterday and today. I normally spot before my period so I’m thinking that’s on his way.

We are having our treatment through the NHS in Scotland. Where abouts are you? This was our first IUI but it hasn’t being plain sailing. In may I had fluid in my uterus so they had to cancel the cycle and June’s cycle I over stimulated as I was on clomid and injections so they had to cancel last month and third time lucky this month .. they reduced my medication and stopped clomid al together so I was just on injections day for 3 days however I only managed to grow one follicle at 17mm so I’m not hopeful this month will work and more so with these cramps 😩. I am 29 and already have a child aged 7 and he came as an utter shock so I’m just scunnered with the whole process, we’ve been trying for nearly 3 years and I had all the checks done, hcg etc and all came back fine and so did my husbands so it’s just awaiting game. Sorry I’ve went completely off on a tangent. Is this your first IUI? Are you private or through the NHS? Xx

Nataliexo · 27/07/2022 17:36

And no sorry I’m not scheduled for bloods. I’ve to phone them if my periods don’t arrive/ arrive and then they’ll take it from there. That’s great news there checking your bloods though, have you done a test yet?

lydia1991 · 27/07/2022 22:24

@Nataliexo I just got my blood test results back. Not pregnant.
Sounds like you've had a difficult time with the IUIs! I'm British but I moved to Malta and am having it done privately here. This was our first IUI. Onto the next one

Awww I’m so sorry to hear @lydia1991 I’ll be on the same boat, I took a pregnancy test this morning out of curiosity and it’s negative so I feel it would have picked up by now and my cramp has been so bad. Have they got you on medicated for each cycle?

lydia1991 · 28/07/2022 20:41

@Nataliexo ow I really hope you just tested too early. I was taking Clomid, although I'm not sure if that's the right treatment for me. My problem is that I have one blocked tube. I've actually decided to change gynaecologists. My gynae doesn't specialise in fertility so now I'm going to see a fertility specialist next week. I only have three rounds left of this treatment before it would be onto IVF so want to make sure I'm doing everything right. What medication are you taking?

@Nataliexo how are you doing? Did you get your period?

Hi @lydia1991

I did on Saturday, I phoned the hospital today and there going to cancel this months cycle. I had problems with getting the catheter in last month so they’ve spoke to my consultant who’s going to dilate me on Monday for next months cycle .. Sounds horrific and I have to be given local anesthetic but at this rate I’m willing to try anything so fingers crossed for next month. How are you getting on? Xx

lydia1991 · 01/08/2022 19:55

@Nataliexo sorry you got your period :( that sounds very uncomfortable but it should be ok with the anaesthetic.

I was having treatment with my gynaecologist, who isn't specialised in fertility, and I'm not sure she's done everything properly so tomorrow I've got an appointment with a fertility specialist so I think I'll be in better hands. When I had the IUI I had to collect my husband's sperm from the hospital, put the tube in my bra to keep it at the right temperature, then drive 45 mins to my gynaecologist who did the IUI. I think I'd rather do it at a hospital where everything is done in the same place. Is that similar to your experience? xx
