Second baby nhs ivf funding

Me and my partner have been ttc for a couple of years. He has had some test snd some the results are low but not terrible.

My tests all came back normal.

The gp told us they will see if we are able to get funding, I was suprised by this as we already have a child. We just got a letter today stating that it is under review, and basically only chase if we don't get a response by mid June. I'm stuck now on weather to wait or just got private. In my mind I am just ready to go private and this waiting and delaying is just getting so tough.

Does anyone else have a similar story and managed to get funding for second child?

I would hate to just wait and then to be told we won't get it, and in that time we could have already been well into the private ivf process.

Just want an idea of the chances that we will be approved?

Thankyou x

That's very unusual. As far as I know there is no funding for 2nd child, but the funding rules vary depending on where you live. It should be very clear on your local authority website I would think. We funded 2nd child privately in Czech Republic, very reasonable cost and outstanding clinic. Good luck.

Yes it is really strange, I’m not sure why it has even reach the review stage. But surely the gp wouldn’t havent referred it unless there is at least a chance it will be approved. I assumed it was a straight no since we have a child but that hasn’t been the case. What it the local authorities website? Not even sure what to search on Google to get to the right place.

What's your local authority/council? You just need to Google it and the funding rules will be searchable

Just looked for you:

Couples are ineligible for treatment if there are any living children from the current or
any previous relationships, regardless of whether the child resides with them. This
includes any adopted child within their current or previous relationships; this will apply
to adoptions either in or out of the current or previous relationships.

Depends on the CCG I believe. Back in the day (and the rules have changed since) we were eligible for three rounds of NHS funded IVF despite the fact that my partner had child(ren) from a previous marriage. We had one round under the NHS, but went privately was the waiting time was 7+ months for a new round. We subsequently had 3 private rounds.

From what I understand nhs doesn't fund treatments if there are any living children. I'm sorry... Have you considered shopping around for private?

Yes I have, and have completely accepted this may be the way to go. It’s just confused me that the gp has requested a funding review in the first place given she knows we have a child. Makes me think she’s knows something we don’t and there is a chance we will be accepted.

Hey @dancingmonkey did you have any updates?

dancingmonkey · 10/05/2022 10:07

Not yet! They said it could be up to 15th June, thanks for checking in though, I’ll update when I can :)
