FET day 3 vs day 5 embryo

We're doing a FET with Create/ABC after a freeze all cycle. As is their policy, they froze the best looking embryo (8 cell grade 2) at day 3 and cultured the others to day 5. We ended up with 2 more frozen embryos, both good quality.

The nurse told me that they usually thaw the day 3 embryo, culture it to day 5, and then use that. But that seems to be more risky than using the good day 5 we already have? My understanding is that that is good on day 3 doesn't always result in a good embryo at day 5. So wouldn't it be better to use a good day 5?

The nurse didn't explain it very well. Has anyone else been in this situation?

I suppose the thinking is if it looks bad on the day they can just thaw another. They don't take long to thaw. An 8 cell grade 2 has a good chance of becoming a blast though.

I did 5 rounds with create - that policy only came in about mid way through I believe as my first 2 cycles everything was taken to day 5. It was only when I then did a 3 cycle package of natural modified That they said about the day 3 freezing.

Have to say I was really sceptical about it! But it did work for me! My final egg collection of the package was a bust and didn't have any fresh so they thawed the day 3 and cultured to day 5 and put it in with a frozen day 6 and I had twins 😂. I get the feeling they prefer to have a really "active" one go in - so if they don't have any fresh ones then thawing a day 3 and culturing to day 5 is the next best thing.

That's great to hear @doingitforthegirls. Congrats on your twins!
