Just had egg collection, lots of follicles on scan but only 9 eggs collected

I’ve been TTC for 4 years but this is my first IVF round. I was given a low does of the stimming meds, 112.5, as I have PCOS and very high AMH and the initial scan showed lots of follicles.

I had 3 scans last week and on Friday I was looking at 15 good sized follicles and 10+ smaller ones. I was told by multiple people that I had responded really well.

I’ve just had my egg collection and they advised they have collected 9 eggs, I should be pleased with this (and I am) but I can’t help wonder about the other follicles on the scans,

So I’m not sure why only 9 - could that mean lots of the follicles didn’t contain an egg? Or just weren’t mature/were over mature?

Thanks 😊

Hi @FruitTwistFanta

I had lots of follicles and only 8 collected 5 fertilised and 3 are still in the running. ET tomorrow hopefully.

9 is a good number for good quality embryos and to not risk OHSS.

Follicles need to be at 18 for collection and they like at least 3 to be this size before trigger so 9 is a good number.

I was told exactly the same that I had responded well.

This was my first cycle and I'm guessing it's yours I think if we need a next time they may let us stim a little longer as they know we are not at risk of OHSS from trigger.

Hope this helps,

9 is an amazing number when do you get your update- joint IVF/FET FEB/Mar on here lots of lovely ladies all with different experiences and egg counts that are going through the same process at similar times Smile

It could mean that the other follicles got too big or didn't get big enough.

@PMAmostofthetime thanks so much for your reply.

Yeah this is my first ivf cycle so not really sure what to ask/expect! I’m getting a call tomorrow to see how many fertilised which I’m excited for but also really nervous!

I was worried about OHSS so I’m glad there was only 9 as I actually feel ok now and I was worried I’d be in a lot of pain after EC.

I’ll have a look at that thread, thanks, and lots of luck for tomorrow! Xx

@FruitTwistFanta it's actually IVF/FET Mar / Apr I got it wrong sorry I'll tag you in it now.

I was worried too and I felt ok just needed naps-
Take it easy and make sure you drink 3 litres of water a day and eat protein as OHSS can still happen.

I was exactly the same- let me know how it goes Smile

Try not to worry, 9 is a great number. I only had 5 collected, two made it to Blasto and one of those is now my son, so it’s not about the quantity but more the quality. Hope it goes well for you

I was in a similar situation in that I had about 30 follicles(!) for my last EC but ended up with 14 mature eggs (20 eggs in total). I felt kind of disappointed at first that only half had viable eggs and I didn’t ‘ultilize’ all the follicles but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work like that! I think when you have a large number of of follicles they are going to be differing sizes so the law of averages and trying to manage that many follicles probably means that you will lose some to ovulation and some will be too small for a viable egg but overall the ‘middle ones’ will be the ones you collect. There is less variation with a lower number of follicles I’d imagine. But that’s just my thoughts on it! 9 is great number in any case.

Hi @FruitTwistFanta. Just to add, I had my first round of fresh IVF aged 37, got 9 eggs, 8 fertilised and 1 became my DS. 3 years later aged 40 i did another fresh round, collected 5 eggs, all fertilised and 1 became my DD (the rest are in the freezer).

Wishing you all the luck in the world. Try and keep the faith, as hideously hard as it is.
