Fibroids

Has anyone been advised that they have an intramural fibroid, but can go ahead with IVF on the basis that it is not perceived to cause issues?

I had IVF with another clinic and two failed transfers. They found two fibroids in my scans but advised that these were not in a place to interfere with implantation. This was six months ago and now worried that they may have grown. I’m going to another clinic now for IVF but they won’t examine me until my baseline scan when I start treatment. Wondering if I should have a hysteroscopy beforehand just to check.

I had one and had to operate on it before having ivf because of the position it was in. Prior to the operation I had very heavy bleeds and would bleed mid-cycle.
Speak with a specialist gyn could be that it isn’t in a position that would impact on implantation

There appears to be sufficient evidence that intramural fibroid affects fertility but the evidence that myomectomy in such patients will improve pregnancy outcome is not strong. Alternatives to myomectomy in these are to shrink the fibroid using something like gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) which is often used during ivf.

There's increased risk of miscarriage. Studies have shown a greater risk of bleeding (60%) in early pregnancy if the placenta is implanted close to the fibroid, compared to when there is no contact between the two (9%).

I had a hysterscopic myomectomy to shave off most of the fibroid. My doctor refused to do any transfer without having it partially removed. It is a very straightforward procedure and I was up and about the following day. Had it done because of the location of the fibroid.
I was seen by a team of fertility specialists and gynecologists.

Thanks @Lady1986. Have a consultation with a specialist gyn on Monday, so hopefully I’ll get some more answers. How long did you have to wait before having a transfer after the op?

@ChoiceMummy There seems to be mixed information on the impact of intramural fibroids. From what I read (briefly), there was a study that found that intramural that don’t distort the cavity nevertheless impact significantly on implantation rates, but doesn’t look like this study took into account the fibroid size or location. I don’t know how big mine is it or where it is. I have a consultation with a specialist gyn on Monday, but may well have a myomectomy before doing a transfer if there is any suggestion that the fibroid could impact implantation or increase the risk of miscarriage. Just hoping it doesn’t delay things too much if I do.

I had a transfer after my second period. My doctor did check a month after the surgery to ensure everything looked good etc. all this was done in sweden though.
