Utrogestan pessaries

Hi all,

I was hoping for a bit of advice from you lovely ladies that have used utrogestan pessaries.

I’m currently using them post IUI - prescribed 3x200mg vaginally daily and have been taking them for the last 6 days.

I was wondering if anyone else experienced side effects? I have been super bloated and constipated and also getting pain/discomfort which is constant in my supra-pubic region, it’s like a dull ache - I’m wondering if this is due to irritation?

I had similar pain when using them my last 2 IUIs which were unsuccessful but really getting sick of the constant pain now!

So, I have 2 questions.

  1. Is this pain/discomfort likely to be due to the utrogestan and has anyone else experienced this?
  1. Would using them rectally be ok? And potentially help with this problem?

I’ve read contradictory things about rectal use so would really love to hear anyones experiences using it this way and if it’s ok to do?

Thanks in advance xx

I'm sorry you're getting side effects, I think it sounds typical for extra progesterone. You can't use utrogestan rectally, it's cyclogest that you can alternate. You could ask your clinic to change and then you'd have an option.

I've used Utrogestan rectally during a mock cycle and it clearly did something, as in November my serum progesterone 5 days after LH surge was 27 with zero pessaries/nothing at all, and in December it was 51 after taking the Utrogestan so it must have been absorbing a decent amount. Might be worth asking your consultant!

@EmzieMurf1987 sorry to hear you've been feeling a bit crap on the pessaries. Just wanted to reassure you - I've done 4 cycles and every time I've used pessaries I get a lot of back ache/uncomfortable feeling also really bad farts! I too am constipated it's all just wonderful side effects unfortunately. It was interesting though as the first 2 times was fresh cycles so I took them as symptoms, the last 2 cycles have been FET so started them before transfer and exact same symptoms.
I believe it's just a result of the increase in progesterone levels, I'm sure I read somewhere once that progesterone prepares the endometrium further and also stops the natural contraction our bodies have in the uterus which would in effect reject an embryo. So given that, that's where the bloated horrible feeling comes from but when we have a "normal" cycle that's when the levels plummet and our body contracts for a period. I hope that makes sense? I'm no doctor but hopefully that reassures you it's totally normal.
Also, I would take the pessaries however your clinic advises but you could always ask them see what they suggest x

Thank you all for your comments, it definitely puts me at ease knowing these side effects are normal and others have had similar experiences.

I think I will just continue taking it as prescribed and speak to my consultant next time to see if there is an alternative.

Thanks again xx
