Premature ovulation before egg colletion

Has anyone had this or almost had this? What was your experience like and what did the docs do to try and stop this/how did you know it was happening etc? Any experiences or advice welcome....!

My backstory is that I believe this happened to me at my first clinic. I have diminished ovarian reserve but had 5 follicles at a scan on Wed before the EC on Sat. No further scans. One follicle had shrunk 1mm between Tues to Wed but I was assured this wasn't a problem. By Wed one had shrunk from 14mm to 4mm and they didnt flush it. So only 4 were flushed. I also went into EC 25 mins late. No eggs.

Now I'm at a diff clinic where they seem much more thorough and do blood tests throughout. Unfortunately, my LH appears to be messing around and it is going up and up despite taking Cetrozide to prevent ovulation. They have added in another Cetrozide in the evening and Indomecatin 3 x a day to try to prevent ovulation. Also I am doing ovulation testing kits a few times a day.. I have a faint line but no clear positive. If I did have a clear positive then it would mean they'll bring me in for EC tomorrow instead of Friday...

Now I am booked in for EC on Friday but wondering if it's the right decision! The risk is that if I do the trigger tonight then EC tomorrow then the eggs won't have had enough time to become mature and I am doing egg freezing (not full IVF) so apparently it is very important that they freeze mature eggs. But if I wait until Friday then I might spontaneously ovulate before. Such a tough decision but the doctor recommended to stick with Friday unless I get a positive ovulation test tonight.. in which case I need to call the emergency line and they'll book me for EC on Thursday...

As I understand it, the risk of doing it tomorrow is that there might be no mature eggs and the risk of doing it Friday is that I might spontaneously ovulate before! Hopefully not if I'm doing the double dose of the Cetrozide though... grrr so stressful! :(

I don't have anything super helpful to add, just wanted to say sorry you are going through this, its such a nightmare when there is any situation like this where there' s a question about timing.

Did you switch clinics specifically because you thought they had messed up the first EC? Has this clinic recommended using the digital OPKs so that there is no interpreting the line? How often are you testing LH at home? x

@Rosiestraws my friend has DOR and experienced spontaneous ovulation before the planned egg retrieval, it is very rare. She felt pain and had some bleeding, she went to the clinic, they scanned and it was confirmed that she had ovulated from the follicles. There is an article in the literature about fluid being aspirated and the eggs being saved, but I think realistically it's very difficult to collect eggs once ovulation has happened. Since then her specialist added in indomethacin.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't find a digital ovulation kit yesterday but I've got one today. Spent £40 on ovulation kits and testing every few hours i guess. One line on the strip one though is faint but noticeable for sure and the other strip style one (but a bit fancier!) is much fainter and the digital one says negative... however I have had issues before with the digital one saying negative for ages but feeling ovulation pain (not during a cycle of treatment though) and then when I went in to the clinic I had ovulated and from the side where I felt the pain. The tricky thing is that I'm feeling twinges of ovulation type pain but so far (scanned this morning) no follicles have ruptured so who knows if it's just because they're growing or I'm more attuned to it... only got 2 follicles each side though so can't be too much growing!

I've also heard it's to do with DOR... my LH was really high at the beginning of my cycle so waited ages for it to drop before i could start injections...I think it's something to do with your body trying really hard to produce eggs because you're running out or something like that! :(

I had a no egg nightmare a few months ago. 4 mature follicles and nothing! I stuck with same hospital (private patient) as I had success with my son there a couple of years ago so wanted to try once more with them before moving on.

Next time around I had lots of blood tests (daily in the few days before the trigger) and I only had two mature follicles but they got 5 eggs.

Sounds like if they’re doing bloods regularly there’re probably on it. Try not to worry. Best of luck for Friday!

I don’t really have any advice as you’re doing all you can I think testing for ovulation. I had 7 cetrotide one day and then the clinic didn’t EC until two days later. I had already ov. They quickly converted to iui and by some miracle I am now nearly due to give birth.
If it happens again, have a plan b like iui to catch any eggs on the loose

Rosiestraws · 25/11/2021 16:43

Thanks for the replies.. well I've gone ahead with the trigger last night and the plan is EC tomorrow morning - I'm high risk for premature ovulation so I'm first on the list and I'll also be scanned before the EC to check if I've ovulated.

I'm definitely feeling ovulation twinges/pains so fingers crossed that's just the eggs growing or trying to ovulate but the indometacin stopping them perhaps... It's good that the cycle will not count as used if I am scanned and found to have ovulated but it just feels like such a waste of time, effort and money if it turns out I've ovulated already :( Stupid body rebelling against science!!

Sorry for late reply @tulipsandsnow yes I changed because of what happened on the first cycle and just in general didnt like the lack of communication/the way it was all run. I think I am going to complain and try to get my money back after this cycle has been finished because I did raise concerns about early ovulation etc and of course I was taken in 25 mins late etc etc..

@Rosiestraws this is a really old post but how did this go? I ovulated before my ER so feeling very pooped about it!

Miraclemuma03 · 25/04/2026 12:44

Yes, my first cycle back from having a baby and trying again for another, i had actually ovulated onw of my follicles and should have cancelled my cycle then and there but trusted the doctor as he has never steered me wrong before and we have had great success with him, anyway in egg retrieval i got 7 eggs which is the most iv ever gotten out of my entire ivf experience but no fertilised eggs even with icsi. 2 eggs were so over mature they fell apart under the microscope, 3 eggs hadn't matured enough for icsi and there were 2 eggs that were mature enough to fertilise but they didnt fertilise and that entire cycle was a bust and I knew in my heart we should have cancelled and saved our money. We have since done 2 more cyles with no luck.

Hiya, i can't recall if I still had all 4 follicles at the scan but I remember I got 3 eggs that round (only 2 mature) so I must have not ovulated all of them!

I do recall I had other cycles where I ovulated early though and had to decide to go ahead or not on the day (as I had 2 follicles before the day and then only 1 on the day for example) but don't think they could have done more.
