Egg retrieval

Hello
This is my first time doing Ivf so I had my egg retrieval yesterday they collected 16 eggs and only 8 were mature enough and only 5 fertilised is this good numbers or bad. Just worried now for the next few days waiting to see what happens next.

My last IVF I had 7 retrieved, 5 fertilised and 2 made it to blasts.
Unfortunately there is no way to predict how many will made it to blasts. There are many factors that influence the final result.

The waiting is a killer, I know but you need to hang in there.

In most cases there is usually some drop off so it might be that not all of these will make it to blastocyst stage but yes there is really no way to predict anything at this stage! You can have only 1 fertilise that makes a good embryo and successful pregnancy, you can have 20 fertilise and have no good quality embryos! It's awful waiting to find out, but I don't think 5 is a bad number at all, keeping my fingers crossed for you xx

Having 5 fertilised eggs gives you a good chance of having at least one embryo to transfer or freeze on day 5, so that seems like a good number to me.

There's usually drop-off at each stage (maturity, fertilisation, day 1- day 3, day 3- day 5) but your numbers look pretty good.

Lots of online posts are about having multiple embryos to freeze, etc, but the embryologists I've spoken with say that most people get one or two embryos by day 5.

I had 6 eggs collected, 3 fertilised, and 1 made it to day 5 blastocyst. We've just entered the third trimester. I was really quite down about the drop-off but the clinic insisted it was pretty normal.

5 is a good number, 🤞 for you. I only had 3 out of 7 fertilise but all 3 made it to day 5 and were top quality embryos. Hopefully you get positive news on Monday x

I had exact same numbers as you in my second round. 16 retrieved, 8 mature, 5 fertilised. Unfortunately I cannot give you an indication of how many turned into blasts, as we froze at day 3, but at least one made it (they didn’t freeze it initially but it improved by day 5 and was frozen).

In my first round I had only 5 collected, all mature, 3 fertilised, 1 made to to early blastocyst by day 5.

Hi! Yes, there is a drop-off at each stage usually, but its so hard to predict how many will make it to blast. You didn't mention your age? As that will have some influence on how many to blast, but 5 sounds good!

I had 6 fertilise, 4 blasts (and out of those 4 blasts two were genetically normal- but they were the two lesser quality ones out of the 4)
