My partner’s recent blood test showed elevated FSH (double from the norm) but still have to wait for an appointment with a doc to discuss

BellaBellini · 20/10/2021 07:27

Hi, my husband has azoospermia and has a raised FSH level of 17

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 08:51

Yeah, mines is 23 and been told it’s indicative of primary testicular failure

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 10:02

Have you managed to conceive with high FSH? @BellaBellini

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 10:02

Did a sperm test show a low count @TheDutchess3

TheDutchess3 · 20/10/2021 11:58

@nancyalan, yes the sperm count is extremely low (0,15 mln post wash) so we are doing ICSI. But we also wanted to investigate his condition further and get more clarity if smth can be improved, as already had 5 cycles…

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 12:15

That’s tough @TheDutchess3 my husband has never had more than 1 sperm in a sample so ICSI isn’t even an option to us yet.

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 12:25

Have all your 5x cycles been ICSI @TheDutchess3

TheDutchess3 · 20/10/2021 15:13

@nancyalan, we have had 2 IUI first (what a waste of time by our clinic!), then 2 fresh ICSI cycles, then 3 FETs.

Sorry to hear about your husband’s results. Have you other options, like TESE?

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 15:53

I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been successful yet @TheDutchess3 what’s your next steps?

We’ve been advised that a TESE wouldn’t get any more than what’s found in sample so we will look to go down micro TESE route which we were told about initially.

TheDutchess3 · 20/10/2021 16:24

@nancyalan, what is micro Tese?

We are thinking of going abroad now. Have been in contact with a clinic in Czech R. and have an appointment in another clinic in Belgium for end December (half a year wait!). Looks like they do more testing and offer more additional options unlike in the NL where I am based. Here the treatment is very conservative and, quite frankly, outdated.

nancyalan · 20/10/2021 18:54

@TheDutchess3 a much more thorough dissection of the testes to try and find sperm.

Good luck with treatment abroad, I hope it goes well!

BellaBellini · 21/10/2021 09:06

@nancyalan no we didn't end up conceiving in the end - my husband had microtese a few years ago, they managed to retrieve 4 vials and froze them but unfortunately all 4 vials didn't survive the thaw so we couldn't go ahead. After this we made an appointment with Jonathan Ramsay, who was brilliant and helped us to understand the situation more. He prescribed my husband clomid to see if that would increase production, which it did by a little but not enough for us to consider going through micro tese again. We've taken a break from our fertility journey for now and just trying to enjoy ourselves for a while before seeing what we want to do next. I do think we were particularly unlucky though as I have read many many positive stories about micro tese working. Wishing you all the best on your journey, if you ever have any questions please feel free to message me, I know what a lonely journey it can feel like at times!

nancyalan · 21/10/2021 18:00

Can I ask what your husbands diagnosis was @BellaBellini? We have a telephone consultation with Dr Ramsay in November 🤞 Are you able to tell me what the process with him is? Sorry for all the questions!

TheDutchess3 · 21/10/2021 20:53

@nancyalan, thank you and good luck to you too! xx

BellaBellini · 22/10/2021 08:44

@nancyalan he was diagnosed with non obstructive azoospermia, the only reason behind it is the FSH level, nothing else seems to have caused it, all the genetics tests he had at the clinic were all fine. We saw Dr Ramsay in January 2020, because we it was before the pandemic we went to his office, where he checked my husband over and carried out blood tests which took a few weeks to get the results, by that point the office had closed due to covid so it was a phone appointment where he suggested trying clomid for a few months and then having another blood test, he sent the prescription in the post, and contacted our gp to book in the next blood test as we couldn't go back to the clinic. On the next phone appointment that's where he advised it had made some difference but not enough to justify having micro tese again so we made the decision to end the treatment with him then. It's great you have an appointment with him, I hope it goes well and you get some answers, I found him to be really kind, knowledgeable and he really took the time to explain everything to us x

Hi hope you don't mind me joining,
My partner has very very low sperm level which is why we are doing IVF and having to have ICSI too, his is totally unexplained to why it's so low. We have done one round on the NHS which failed with none of the eggs becoming fertilised, so we went private and had a cycle 3 package where we now have 3 embryos frozen, sadly one failed yesterday after having it transferred. Gutted. Just worrying now the others aren't going to work and worrying even more about the low sperm count if we have to go for another round
