Risk of OHHS IVF, 24 follicles ! Am I in trouble ?

I had my first scan at day 11 of injections and they found 24 follicles between 11-24 , trigger shot will be the next day and egg collection 2 days after ! They said I am at risk for OHHS because of so many follicles ! Can someone advise me and reassure me ? Will I defanetly have to cancel my fresh transfer ? They will let me know after egg collection if I can go ahead or not ! Right now I don’t have any pain or anything ! Just worried taht my cycle will be cancelled ! Any experience of how many you had and if you developed OHHS thank you soooo much !!! Star

I had my fresh transfer cancelled due to risk of OHSS. I had 20 eggs collected, I’m not sure how many follicles there were. I don’t know that they can tell from number of follicles alone, although a higher number is more of a risk. My clinic took bloods at each scan too and after getting the results of the last one before the trigger they told me that it would be a freeze all. I didn’t end up developing any symptoms.

Don’t think of it as a cancelled cycle, your collection and fertilisation will go ahead, there will just be a delay with the transfer. I was disappointed when they first told me but actually it was really good for me. I completely relaxed for 6 weeks before we started the FET. DH and I booked a last minute long weekend in Paris where I could enjoy a few glasses of wine and forget about infertility, knowing we had our blasts in the freezer. It’s much better to go with their advice than to waste a blast when your body isn’t in the optimum condition.

Oh and also, some studies show that FETs have a higher rate of success than fresh transfers. It’s certainly not any lower

@Betsyboo87 thank you for your support ! It’s Strange that I never had blood or scans done before day 11 of injections , I hear other people having scans on day 3 and 6 and 10 to see how follicles are growing but I did not get that , only one scan on the day when I finished all my drugs … I’m just thinking that if I had one extra scan on day 6 , maybe OHHS could of Been avoided Sad I’m just hoping for the best now and that I don’t develop ohhs after egg collection ! Smile thank you

@ShareLove hi I had only 9 eggs collected on my 1st Ivf, wasn't at risk of OHSS but I got it bad the day after EC
I was in a lot of pain and discomfort and it was touch and go if ET would go ahead but it did last minute and the day the embryo went back it settled which sometimes isn't the case they warned so I was lucky I guess

Although it didn't work and we are cycling again soon I will almost try and ask for a freeze because I don't want to go through OHSS again
Admittedly it was only 5-6 days but it was hell and I was devastated at the thought of not being able to transfer but like other poster has said it can sometimes be best and gives your body time to heal and FET have great success rates
I can understand where you are coming from what you say, I felt the same as you but for this time round for me I will be looking out for OHSS again and if I have any slight symptom ( mine came 1-2 hours after EC) I will be pushing for a freeze all x

@ShareLove I had 42 follicles and a fresh cycle. If I was to do it again I’d had had a freeze all. I felt awful after my fresh, at my 12 week scan they commented that there was still fluid and my ovaries still enlarged. Whereas I was fine during my FET.

Absolutely not saying this will be the case for you, everyone is different but just that a freeze all isn’t that bad, it gives your body some time to recover. Good luck

I had a fresh transfer despite symptoms of OHSS and I definitely would recommend trying to avoid that. The symptoms got much worse and even at my 12 week scan (and a 14 week one!) my ovaries looked swollen and overstimulated.

It's frustrating to wait but OHSS is not fun.

Good luck!
