6w6d scan - no fetal pole or heartbeat :(

Dear all,

I was hoping to return here to share the good news after my first ultrasound scan today, but unfortunately it wasn't what we had very much hoped for. The doctor was able to see a yolk sac but no baby or heartbeat at 6w6d. She booked another scan for next week but pretty much told us that this is not a viable pregnancy.

We are obviously devastated as it is our 2nd IVF cycle and the first that we get to embryo transfer. Any similar stories out there? Thank you once again for all your help and support.

Hi @Fabsco, sorry to hear you are going through this. I had the same on my second ivf and it didn't end positively i'm afraid. It progressed a little but never saw a heartbeat and i eventually miscarried around 9 weeks. However, that was day 5 embryo and had a frozen day 6 from the same cycle which we later transferred and is now my beautiful daughter. Hopefully you may have better luck but even if you don't please don't lose hope x

@Galgal15 Thank you so much for sharing your journey with me. I'm so sorry for your miscarriage at 9 weeks but happy to hear that the FET worked and you have your rainbow baby. I have a positive antinuclear antibody that I found out after a dermatological investigation, and worry that this could be causing my little embabies not to develop.

I had a MMC last year and mentioned this to my consultant at the IVF clinic but he basically said positive ANA doesn't usually affect pregnancy outcomes and early miscarriages are mainly caused by abnormal chromosomes. I would like to have those investigated before my FET, as we only have one frozen embryo. :(

Thank you once again for taking time to respond to my post and all the best for the future!

Just wanted to come back here for an update as I search for these posts on embryos measuring behind and was glad when there was an update. We went for our eight-week scan and there was a little embryo with a heartbeat on screen. We were both shocked as we were ready for difficult conversations on miscarriage management, etc. Embryo is measuring a week behind, so we'll have to go back for another scan next week. This is such a rollercoaster! Good luck to everyone reading this post and I hope that you'll get your rainbow baby soon.🌈

@Fabsco Thanks for the update, am so glad it’s working out so far and shows that all hope is not lost sometimes. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy Smile

Fabsco · 06/08/2021 12:12

@IslandStars Thank you for your kind words. We are cautious but definitely a better scan than what we had expected. We're living one day at a time and glad to have got this far. All the best to you!

Congtatulations @Fabsco, delighted to hear everything went well today. Very best of luck for the rest of your pregnancy

Fabsco · 07/08/2021 08:12

@Galgal15 Thank you so much for your message. We are still concerned because our dates could not be wrong (IVF baby) and the doctor couldn't explain why the embryo is still measuring one week behind. At least he used the word "cautious" rather than "concerning" - the doctor who performed the ultrasound last week was definitely more negative. I'll come back here to post an update after the next scan. Thank you so much for all the kindness and support!

@Fabsco glad to see your update :) I went for a scan on 6w3d & baby measured 6w. I was a bit worried as mine is IVF baby too. But the nurse said it happens that babies are few days behind even with ivf. EPU said that the progress was as expected & discharged me. I am now waiting for midwife appointment.

Body works in mysterious ways & at this stage it’s not possible to take accurate measurements. I have 2 scan photos a minute apart from the 6w3d scan. One says 5mm crl & other says 3.1mm crl. A lot depends on angle etc at such an early stage.

I hope it’s more good news in your next update :)

@morningvenus Thank you so much for sharing your story with me and congratulations on your little one! I am glad that they were so positive at your appointment and wish the doctor at my first scan was a little bit more hopeful. She scanned my womb for 5 minutes and said that it was concerning that she couldn't see a fetal pole or heartbeat and the yolk sac was worryingly large. She was quite direct and said that I was probably going to miscarry that week. I asked the clinic to speak to another consultant over the phone and she also gave me the impression that my chances of seeing anything at my next appointment were less than 1%. I had a horrible week and went in for the next appointment expecting to discuss miscarriage management options.

The doctor at my second scan was more positive and said that we are not out of the woods yet but there was some development from last week, so a follow-up scan is needed. I still have the impression that they are waiting for a miscarriage to happen as a nurse phoned me from the clinic to ask how I was doing and if I had any cramping or bleeding. I understand that they don't want to give us false hope and they probably deal with a high number of pregnancy failures because they don't test the embryos for aneuploidy.

The only person who has been optimistic is my acupuncturist who treats a lot of pregnant ladies through IVF and told me that it is so common to be measuring behind until 12 weeks. Sometimes the embryo takes longer to implant or sticks in an awkward position in the womb, so it makes it difficult to get accurate measurements. It's such a rollercoaster, isn't it? I will get back here to provide an update and would like to wish you all the best with your pregnancy. God bless

So sorry to hear this terrible news. I've been there so i understand the heartbreak. Take time to grieve as a much-wanted baby is a loss, even at these early stages. Try to be kind to yourself and i wish you the best on your journey

Fabsco · 12/08/2021 08:04

@Galgal15 Thank you so much for your kindness. It has been such a difficult journey for us and this little embryo. We had three scans and knew that our little one was struggling. My husband and I will take time to process the pain and grief, and then decide on the next steps. Thank you for all the support received here. ❤️
