IVF for second baby-how long after having your first did you start IVF for your second?

Hi all,

I had my baby early last summer after my second FET and am thinking about starting proceedings for a FET for a second baby. I’m wondering how long other people left it? We haven’t really tried naturally and I suppose there is a very small chance it could happen but I really don’t expect it to and find the whole process rather stressful.
I start a new job in Sep and it’s a job where I cannot isolate from Covid so that throws another spanner in the works. It’s making me tempted to rush it through before I start-but then I know it’s not ideal turning up pregnant at a new job.

Would love to hear other people’s experiences /thoughts on this.
Thanks!

From what I've seen on other threads most are starting another cycle around the 12 month mark - I know my clinic said 18 months if you have a c section and they'd consider 12 months if doctors signed off that the scar had healed?

For me I had twins so need to time it so they are getting 30 hours childcare before giving birth to another one and that's if my husband agrees! 🤣

@ivfgottwins thanks for your reply. We are at the 13 month mark abd plan a transfer for month 14/15. I didn’t have a c section so hopefully doctors won’t think it’s too soon if I am successful.

Twins -amazing! Bet you have had a busy but lovely time with them! Don’t blame you re waiting re childcare! It’s so expensive!!

Don’t not have a child just because of work or what anyone thinks, if you want a second child you have one :) good luck x

Starting ivf again when DS was 2. He'll be 7 soon and still no sibling 😔

Hi so we were told 6 months minimum after a c-section (advice seems to really vary on this!). I started thinking about doing a FET when our first was about 6 months, first consultation was about 9 months post delivery but we didn’t manage to do the FET until a few months later due to COVID. We tried naturally but only for a few cycles while waiting for the FET. Didn’t really consider trying naturally first as it hadn’t worked out before and I was over 40 at this point so wanted to move quickly. We were also keen to end our fertility journey ASAP whether the attempt for a sibling worked or not as really struggled with the thought of it hanging over us for a long time with multiple attempts. We had success after x2 attempts at FET and there’s now a 2 year gap between our IVF babies.

I had 2 Frosties from first cycle after baby born last summer and transferred them when my son was 9/10 months and then 10/11 months - sooner than I would have wanted but didn’t want to wait in case neither worked. As it happened neither did work so I’ve just done a cycle of ivf as he is about to turn 1, the fresh transfer failed but I’ve got a few Frosties in storage now. Tbh I regret not just doing the cycle when he was 6 months and we were in lock down and doing an elective freeze all - I’m 38 though so time is not on my side necessarily. I’m now taking a month off for a holiday but will do another FET in august and hope to have a second baby next year if (please god) one of my embryos worked.

In your shoes depending how old you are I’d do a freeze all and wait until you’re settled into your job.

Thanks all -it’s really good to hear about your experiences. It’s just so hard making all these decisions isn’t it! Without treatment you don’t need to overthink it all like this.

Time wise -I have frozen embryos and I’m 36 so it’s not super urgent -ideally I would wait a few months I think -also moving house shortly too. But the main issue is I will start teaching and get worried that I might get into contact with a covid case and then have to cancel my cycle. If one of the pupils in my class is ill then even if I’m not -I imagine I would have to isolate. Covid is just another thing to make this harder isn’t it!!
