Unusual gestational sac shape at 6 weeks

Hi

So, we're currently 6wk1d with our 3rd pregnancy (no living children, 2 miscarriages) which is an IVF pregnancy. Clear positive tests but I had some pain from probable mild OHSS so had NHS scans last week and this week. Last week's scan was too early to do anything other than confirming that the location was ok and that my ovaries are not ok (covered in huge cysts and inflammation).

Today, the scan showed a heartbeat but the sonographer said that the gestational sac is the wrong shape so "it'll likely miscarry". The sac looks intact (not visibly breaking down) but kind of tear-drop shaped with the heartbeat towards the narrower end.

I suppose I'm just wondering if anyone else has had unusual shaped sacs and whether the outcome is inevitable?

I'm sorry to hear you've got some concerns @Scirocco I hope it is nothing sinister. When is your clinic scan? I hope it brings some reassurance ❤️

Thanks for replying @VenusStarr, my official IVF clinic scan isn't for another 2 weeks. It's quite upsetting as getting even this far felt like beating the odds (poor response to stims, low fertilisation rate, drop-off, mild OHSS). We've no frosties and the state of things on the scans suggests we might not be able to try again for a while (and I'm not getting any younger...). Not sure how to get DH (and myself) through a third loss if it comes to that.

@Scirocco I'm so sorry you find yourself in such a worrying situation. I'm afraid I don't know much about different shaped sacs but I did go through an IVF miscarriage in which I was having scans with heartbeat and growth but the sac was too small. In my case I was certain I was going to miscarry due to the size of the sac and yolk sac but professionals kept dismissing me. It was an absolutely agonising few weeks.

I really hope things work out well for you. Just wanted to give you a hand hold as I know how it feels to go through something like this. Hoping for a happy outcome xxx

Thanks @Janefx40 - it helps to know there are people who care. 💔
