2AA blastocyst transfer on day 5 - any success stories?

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone had experience of a 2AA blastocyst transfer (on day 5) and whether you were successful or not?
The number 2 threw me a bit as seems low but then the AA gave me some hope?
It's our last egg/chance!

Would be keen to know! I only got 2A from my first IVF cycle abroad. Haven't done the transfer yet

ivfgottwins · 20/06/2021 19:08

I had a spreadsheet somewhere which gave the % chance of success depending on grading - I think for a 2aa it was pretty good - not as high as transferring a 4 or 5aa but given a couple more hours yours would likely have been at that stage anyway so you'd be looking at around a 35% success rate x

Tara8 · 21/06/2021 07:19

Thank you both for responding.
I had a look online but found very little about 2AA transfers or lower grading transfers.

@Rj1988 when is your transfer?

The clinic said I had 3 other blastocysts but they were not good enough quality to freeze, so this is it for us. I wondered why they didn't then freeze the 2AA and try transferring the lower grades to give us another shot at least?

I'm surprised they didn't ask you what you wanted to do - transfer 2 low grade ones and freeze the AA one but I guess their goal is to give you a healthy baby in the quickest time possible rather than let you go through the stress of multiple transfers x

ExpectantTwinMum2022 · 21/06/2021 08:40

@Tara8 we transferred our only embryo which was a 2ab, I felt exactly the same as this was our only embryo that made it to day 5, however I am now pregnant with twins! I hope it all works out for you!

ivfgottwins · 21/06/2021 11:44

@ExpectantTwinMum2022

Congratulations! I had twins in January.....I'm debating transferring our final frozen embryo in a year or two but bit scared in case it splits and I have twins again! (Although I'd love twins again - they are bloody amazing but my doctor's would kill me and so would my bank manager! 🤣)

ExpectantTwinMum2022 · 21/06/2021 13:14

@ivfgottwins thank you, we are only 11 weeks at the minute so we are still getting used to the idea, excited and nervous at the same time. That's amazing that you also have twins, what are the chances of it happening twice? My OH has already said that's it now haha.

Tara8 · 21/06/2021 15:31

Congrats to you both!

@ivfgottwins just out of interest, do you remember the grading of your twins embryos? Wondering if the "2" part of the grading means 2 babies?! GrinWink

OP posts:
ivfgottwins · 21/06/2021 16:41

Ha no the 2 part is the stage it's at so 2 is an early blastocyst as opposed to a 5 which is hatching and a 6 which is hatched

My twins were a day 5 5BA and a day 6 4BB x

Rj1988 · 22/06/2021 00:06

@Tara8 - I was on the risk of developing ohss hence will go for a frozen transfer if any of the embroys make it to day 5

Rj1988 · 02/08/2021 18:37

@Tara8 hello, how are you doing? And how's your preg coming along?

Tara8 · 04/08/2021 14:01

Hey @Rj1988 thanks for checking in on me! I'm doing OK thanks. I'm 9 weeks and 3 days now. Had my scan with our ivf clinic at 8 weeks and all was well; could see the heart beating and arms and legs forming. It was so surreal as I was really expecting the worse and even now I don't feel pregnant so constantly worrying something has gone wrong!

How are you? What's happening with your transfer, have you got a date yet? X

Rj1988 · 04/08/2021 16:46

@Tara8 - that's super news!!!!!! I am so happy for you Biscuit so 3 more weeks and then you will be officially 12 week plus

I am planning to do my transfer this month. I have only 1 in the freezer so really praying it survives the thaw

Are you still on the oestrogen and progesterone pills? And if you don't mind can I know which clinic you were with?

Tara8 · 05/08/2021 07:14

Yes I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow but no 12 week scan booked yet. I might have to book a private one in between if there is a delay on scans as I just get so anxious that something is wrong and not sure I can wait for 14 weeks!

I stopped the progesterone pessaries after my scan last week as the nurse said they had done everything they needed to do at this point and my body would do the rest now.

Ahhh that's exciting! How are you feeling about it all? I read that that lot of clinics will now only do FET because they seem to have a higher success rate than fresh transfers. Must be more natural I suppose as gives the body time to settle and recover after all the hormones and procedures and general poking about! Really wishing you all the best, I hope it works out for you. Will be thinking of you you keeping everything crossed!

We were with the Agora Clinic in Hove.

@Tara8 - all the best with your next scan and can't you just book a 12 week scan with your GP instead? But either ways even if you do private I am sure it's going to be worth it than taking the stress of not knowing what is happening.

Not sure if FET are more successful I think it mostly depends on embryo quality
They have asked me to start estrogen tablets which is making me so nauseas and headaches on top so it's not easy again... keeping my fingers crossed for transfer xx

Tara8 · 30/08/2021 17:19

@Rj1988 how are you? Did you get to do your transfer this month? Thinking of you! x

Zibidee · 30/08/2021 22:55

The reason they freeze is more likely to do with your recovery from egg retrieval. If you had more than 15eggs you are at risk of ohss.
But freezing does carry the risk an embryo might not survive thawing.
Our grade 2 embryo suddenly became a grade 4 in less than 12hrs so definitely not to be discounted.

Rj1988 · 04/09/2021 22:03

Hi @Tara8 - hope you doing well.
Unfortunately I miss carried at 4.5 weeks. I am quiet devastated as I tested positive very early on but after the 4th week the hcg wasn't rising well. I had to rush to A&E.
This was our only embryo so this is it for us now

Tara8 · 05/09/2021 07:46

@Rj1988 I am so incredibly sorry. I really don't know what to say other than sorry. It's just so cruel isn't it.
I hope you're getting lots of love and support and taking some time for yourself and your partner.
It took me a long time to process but I managed to get some counselling after our first miscarriage and then failed ivf. Personally I found it useful talking to someone about it all and exploring feelings further and trying to think about things in another way. In time you might find something like that beneficial too.
It's the loneliest place to be but please know you are not alone, thinking of you.
With love xxx

Hi everyone,

I hope you don’t mind me posting on this old thread but we have a frozen day 5 2AA embryo and I can’t seem to find much info about that grade online until I stumbled across this thread. Just looking for a bit of hope I guess. Like someone said in this - the number 2 threw me! Will be doing a natural non medicated transfer hopefully end of September and keeping myself busy until then driving myself mad with googling…!

Tara8 · 12/08/2023 14:02

Hi there! I'm the original poster so got an email to say someone had replied to my thread, what a blast from the past!
I still don't know much about the grading system but I think someone else commented that an AA is very good and the number before it is how far along the egg has developed? I think it can be a bit of pot luck (as well as a lot of science and hard work of course) but I've read lots of stories about lower grade eggs going on to be very healthy pregnancies!
It's so hard not to keep googling isn't it? Easy to say but do try to be kind to yourself and don't get too caught up in the googling, you've come so far already and done the best you can! Wishing you loads of luck for your transfer next month.
I now have a bonkers 18 month old girl running around the living room and wrecking the place, she was definitely a strong egg!

@Tara8 haha I can imagine it was a total blast from past! I just couldn’t find anything else and your post was perfect saying 2AA blast as that’s exactly what I have frozen! I think I’ve read on one of my many google searches that the number is not necessarily the most important part but the two letters are significant so might try and hold onto having the AA and your story that clearly worked out!

We transferred a fresh 3CC last month but knew changes were very slim and it didn’t stick so really hoping this has a better chance. I’m already worrying about it surviving the thaw before anything else - literally worrying about every part of it! They’ve advised it will be natural non medicated FET so hoping my body will have calmed down from all the meds and be the best place for the embryo.

thanks for replying I really appreciate it!
