Pregnant before embryo transfer

Can anyone advise on the following, please.

If, at the time of embryo transfer, you have had sexual intercourse 4 weeks previously does the clinic check, before transferring the embryo, to see if you are already pregnant ?
You can be pregnant but not know you are, does the clinic check this out ?

My clinic advised using barrier contraception to try to prevent this. It would be difficult to 100% confirm as any pregnancy would be too small to see on ultrasound and you'd have elevated hCG from the trigger shot medications if doing a fresh cycle.

To be honest if you had conceived 4 weeks previously you'd be classed as 6 weeks pregnant in which case when they did the transfer something would be visible. Also you'd have monitoring etc inbetween and they would be able to see for example your lining having thickened which is also an indicator of early pregnancy and they'd want to investigate further

I've always done non medicated transfers so I could also try naturally the same time as transfers so as not to waste an egg and my clinic was fine with it

Many thanks for the information on this. It has been really helpful.

Following on from the posts above.

We had sex and then, I understand, that the lady had her eggs removed from her for IVF 5 days later. If she was pregnant at the time of egg removal then presumably she would not have had her period. Is this correct ?

@kindness43 I'm really confused by this! Is this your own situation? If so when exactly did you have sex prior to egg collection?

Dochas121 · 18/10/2021 16:42

There is a big difference between embryo transfer and egg collection. You should contact your clinic to explain this properly to you. Your clinic should also be giving you proper advice about using contraception or not during your IVF treatments. You shouldn’t have been having unprotected sex prior to egg collection.

I'm confused too! If she was pregnant it would be seen on all the ivf pre egg collection scans?

If you had sex with a lady 5 days prior to egg collection, then no, that can't have made her pregnant because she had not ovulated. I'm not sure if that's what you asked, but that's the sense I made of it Confused
