3rd ivf no mature eggs, 1 matured in lab

Hi, so had my 3rd egg collection today. 8 eggs collected but none were mature. Clinic emailed to say in afternoon that 1 matured in lab and will be fertilised with icsi.

Has something like this ever happened to you; any success stories?

Any reason why eggs won’t mature? I am 37. This cycle I stimmed only for 7 days. On day 5 scan I had about 10 follicles. 2 were 14 & 15 mm. so gynaec said to stim for 2 more days. Possibly 7 days of stimmimg is too low. Will find out during follow up appointment.

Needless to say I am extremely devastated. Beginning to wonder if having a child is not for us. I don’t know what more to do. Right supplements, right diet, good lifestyle.. I do everything as instructed. Feeling so helpless right now.

We had a similar outcome in our second round. Will they try to mature the other eggs overnight in the lab?

My issues are quite complex but we managed to get mature eggs on the third round.

7 days is a short stimulation. It sounds like they didn’t stimulate you for long enough.

My successful round, I was on stimulation drugs for 14 days (collected CD18). I also had a double trigger injection and extra dose of stimulation drugs. My follicles were also much larger, the smallest follicle that yielded a mature egg was 16/17mm on trigger day.

Also, I’m really sorry - I remember how gutting it was to find out that we had absolutely nothing to show for my second round (the good egg didn’t fertilise normally). So much effort and money gone to waste. Take care of yourself.

7 days is a very short stimulation - why did they trigger you at that point - were the follicles all very large? I’ve done 6 rounds of ivf and stimmed between 10-12 days on each.

Also what was your oestradial like?

shazzz1xx · 24/04/2021 21:44

I don’t think you stied for long enough.. when they said 2 more days more like should have been 4 more days maybe 5 x

shazzz1xx · 24/04/2021 21:44

Stimmed* sorry

That sucks Flowers. Definitely worth speaking to your clinic though if this egg doesn't fertilise - 7 days of stims does seem quite short (I thought 10 + days was more common) - unless most of your follies (not just the lead ones) were very close to the 14/15 mm to need to stim for only 2 more days.

I think it depends on the drugs used, but I've read a follicle can be up to about 24mm or as small as 15 mm for IVF without it being necessarily too mature or immature to get an egg from. They just seem to prefer as many follicles as possible to be around 16 - 20 mm at trigger, as stats seem to show that works best as far as I know.

As pp mentioned, maybe you need a double trigger shot as well, my clinic give me one automatically I think due to my age (39) - not that it's worked out for me yet!

Hi, sorry for creating a post and then disappearing. The last few days have been like a roller coaster for me.

I don't have answers to all your questions.. I am with Gennet in Prague & they don't do blood tests during stims. So they didn't measure oestradiol. We had an opportunity to speak to the doctor. She doesn't think 7 days of stims was low. She thinks it's more related to the timing of the trigger. Also looking at this IVF & the last 2; she recommends a long protocol to me. Didn't discuss all the details as it was transfer day for us. Regarding the size of follicles, she didn't measure all during the scan. On both ovaries the leading follicles were 14 & 15 mm. & others were big enough for her to set trigger & egg collection day.

Regarding the outcome - So 8 eggs collected on Saturday. all immature. 1 got matured in the lab later in the day that we were aware of. Apparently 2nd matured shortly after. Both were fertilized with ICSI; 1 successfully fertilized, other didn't. Progress of fertilized egg -
Day 2 - 3 cell grade 1
Day 3 - 8 cell grade 1-2
Day 4 - Morula grade 1
We transferred on day 4 as there was no point in waiting till day 5. but didn't transfer on 3 as I was waiting for the result of TSH

Now it's wait & watch for us. Don't know what the outcome will be. I am too petrified to voice my little hope :(

@IamnotwhouthinkIam sorry for the daft question but what does a double trigger involve? Is it 2 injections or just a higher dose of the trigger?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 15:15

@Eiremogra -In my case it was 2 injections of Gonasi 5000 (not sure if they do it as a single 10 000). Although in the round of IVF which seems to have worked (I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant), I actually had 3 trigger injections - the 2 Gonasi plus an Ovitrelle 250! But I was 40 by then and only ever got a few eggs each time, so they probably thought I needed all the help I could get - I was on extra (very high) stims that round too and stimmed for 15 days in total. Perhaps my body just needed more to produce better quality eggs? (I am fairly tall and slightly overweight).

Eiremogra · 06/09/2021 16:01

@IamnotwhouthinkIam thanks for that. Had another scan this morning and asked about the double trigger, consultant didn’t feel it was appropriate?! Been sent home with 250 ovitrelle to take Tuesday evening and in for EC first thing Thursday morning. So stressed 😩

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 16:24

@Eiremogra - It might be dependant on how much stims you were on, affects how much "trigger" you need? I was on 450iu Menopur plus 1mg Buserelin daily, so very high - but most women are on much lower doses. Good Luck!
