Clomid - too many follicles?

Luna1108 · 07/03/2021 09:06

Hi everyone

It’s my first round of clomid this months and on my scans there were 4 follicles - 18, 2x17 and 16mm.

I’ve been told to abandon this cycle as there is too high a risk of multiples, and I’m so disappointed.

I want to try anyway... has anyone had this many follicles and ended up with multiples?! Obviously I don’t want to end up with 4, but I would be very happy with 1 or 2.

I don’t want to wast a month, is this a bad idea?

Thanks for reading x

If it was me I would take the risk and not waste the cycle, the chances of having quads is very low but you'll need to be prepared for twins or triplets!

YouBoggleMyMind · 07/03/2021 21:21

I'd also risk it a did a couple of times when I over stimulated on clomid. Didn't get pregnant either time.

I understand in some countries they risk IUI with 4 follicles (rather than 3 max as in this country). I also think trying naturally (as I assume you are?) has roughly the same chance or even slightly less of working than IUI.

Personally it would depend on my age whether I would risk it. Early 30's or younger it would be more likely to work and you could get multiples (as your egg quality should still be good - although I think quads would be extremely unlikely!). Mid or late thirties, your egg quality may be poorer so this would be less likely and if it were me I'd probably go ahead.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I’m 31 so I think that’s maybe why the clinic have been so adamant about not trying. Gave me all sorts of scenarios in which it could go wrong. We were on a timed intercourse cycle, so I’ve been told no trigger and wait until next month.

@Luna1108 what did you decide???

Luna1108 · 25/03/2021 06:35

@lastbany we decided not to try although I regret it to be honest!!

I’m back on day 2 of clomid today at half the dose of last time so here’s hoping for 2 good follicles rather than 4.

Does anyone know, can this happen on Letrozol? I've got some to start this month but haven't been asked to go for a scan. They just said to phone back after my period when I'll already have started taking the tablets. The clinic were being super pushy about doing IUI but we wanted to try naturally for a couple of cycles so I'm thinking about taking the Letrozol and avoiding the clinic.

@Luna1108 ye I'm on day two well today day three but taking at night! Did it make a difference to your AF? Was it very heavy? I'm just hoping it's ok caus everyone seems to take day 3 well start on tht I started day 5

Bec18x · 25/03/2021 13:23

I've done clomid and Letrozole and never had a scan on either of them but never ovulated either. I'm cycle day 6 today and I've been taking clomid 100mg and Letrozole 7.5mg together this cycle to see if my body responds to it 🤷🏼‍♀️ Waiting for my Ivf referral so thought I'd have one last try before that. I do find it weird how I've never had a scan though..

Luna1108 · 25/03/2021 13:58

@lastbany my cycle was normal length and I know I ovulated because I did a private CD21 progesterone and my level was through the roof! Must have ovulated all 4 follicles. My first day of AF was so painful, the cramps were unbearable! But I’m fine now on CD3.

@Luna1108 wow!! Any side effects of the clomid xx

Luna1108 · 25/03/2021 18:14

@lastbany mainly hot flashes, but also sort of feeling a bit ‘off’ / sleepy and some intense ovulation pain. I take it in the evening too, about 6 ish! This your first round?

I’m hoping my high progesterone is a good thing for next month, I haven’t really been able to ask anyone as I got the test done separately and not through the clinic. So Confused Hmm

@Luna1108 yes hun my first round! I've not had any scans or anything so does worry me slightly I can pay for a follicle scan but I don't want to fork out 150£!

lastbany · 25/03/2021 18:23

@Luna1108 I have flushing when o of hot bath lol but mostly bloating it feels uncomfortable actually! Because I ovulate I'm so worried of tht supose ovulation thing that can be dangerous!! So every twinge I'm like ong shall I stop!!!

Luna1108 · 25/03/2021 20:15

@lastbany ah man my monitored cycle is so expensive! They scan me / take bloods every day for 4 days then do CD21 bloods too.
