Poor quality embryos - advice/success stories please

Hi all,
I am on my first cycle of IVF and due to have a Day 5 embryo transfer this afternoon. The embryologist has just called to say that out of the two embryos we have:

  • 1 was last recorded as a 5 cell but now has a large vacuole. This vacuole may burst but she advised it is very poor quality and the development prior to the appearance of the vacuole was abnormal.
  • 1 was a 7 cell at last update and has now been trying to compact but has currently left out 50-60% of its material in the current compaction and is also poor quality.

I have been advised that things may still change over the next 3/4 hours until embryo transfer but it just seems like it is over before it has even started really.

One option would be to put both embryos back in, but is it even worth it if they are abnormal and/or poor quality?

I don't fully understand the embryo process so if anyone has any advice on this situation or success stories with transfer of poor quality embryos, I would be grateful to hear.

Thank you!

Are you definitely day 5 and not not day3??

I'd recommend googling stages of blastocyst development - sounds to me that the one at 5 cell hasn't progressed from day 3 so is unlikely to become a blastocyst, also the 7 cell is more like a day 3 too?

Yes definitely Day 5 but thanks for replying! :)

When I say at last update in regards to cell count, that was Saturday, the update this morning was re. the vacuole and the compacting. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

At the clinic now so will find out another update shortly and see what they recommend transferring.

You’ve gotten this far so personally if the clinic will do it I’d just transfer them both, but be realistic that the chance of it working may be small and then I’d seek advice about how to improve things for next time.
