Freezing day 3 embryos

Hi everyone, I wondered if I could have your thoughts on the following. We are currently waiting to see if our 4 fertilized eggs will develop into blastocysts, today is only day 1. The clinic we are at have a policy that they will freeze a day 3 if we get that far and if there are others still going, then let them develop further to day 5. The embryologist also said that if on this or our future cycles (we’re doing 3) we got blastocysts they would suggest defrosting the day 3 and seeing if it will grow to day 5. A previous consultant told me that he didn’t think day 3 embryos survived freezing and thawing very well, my clinic has said that it shouldn’t be an issue but it is our choice. Any advice/thoughts. Obviously we’re not even at that stage yet, but it’s something I’m wondering about. My clinic also said roughly they would expect 20-30% fertilized eggs to make blastocysts at my age (41). The emotional side of doing IVF is so difficult. Thanks in advance

Hi everyone @elsaesmeralda @Westnorwood @bicyclesandbeyond @ivfbeenbusy @MabelG so we had the final update this morning and only one of the three early embryos developed further and is a 3CC so not the best quality :( we do have the other 5AB so we’re pleased with this result. Do any of you have any experience with the grading? How likely is it that a 3CC will implant? It doesn’t sound too hopeful, but the embryologist said they have had births from 3CC’s which is why they froze it. We have 2 more cycles left so hopefully we’ll get more. The other two started to degrade.. but we’d have rather known now. I’m happy and disappointed at the same time x

Hi @Sara279
My clinic had exactly the same policy - I did a round with Create and ended up with a day 3 embryo frozen, and 3 day 5 embryos. It was a freeze all cycle. I did a FET in August and we chose to defrost the day 3 one. The lab cultured it for 2 days and put it back in on day 5. It defrosted fine and developed into a decent grade by day 5. The embryologist said if it didn't start growing again in the lab it probably wouldn't have led to a viable pregnancy anyway, and in that scenario they would have just taken a day 5 embryo out and used that instead so I could definitely have a transfer either way. Unfortunately it turned into an ectopic pregnancy but I liked the day 3/day 5 approach. Good luck!

Hi what is your update I am also with create

@nabsal3 hello! I did 3 FETs with Create - the first was ectopic, the second BFN, and the third resulted in my son 18 months ago. Good luck with your treatment!

Create St Paul or Wimbledon

Sunflower360 · 06/07/2023 22:13

That is good to hear @bicyclesandbeyond Could I please ask did you do mild or natural modified IVF? Considering Create's 3 cycle packages and am just thinking about our options. I have low AMH of 6 pmol and AFC of 4-6

bicyclesandbeyond · 07/07/2023 07:00

@nabsal3 we started at St Paul's and then moved to Wimbledon when we moved out if London midway through treatment. They let you move between clinics quite easily - we had scans at Wimbledon but then went up to St Paul's for transfers as that is where our embryos were stored. Continuity wasn't great - we saw a different person nearly every time, but ultimately we got the outcome we wanted so it didn't seem to affect us too much.

@Sunflower360 we did a mild IVF cycle but I was 36 with an AMH of 12 and AFC of 20. We got 15 eggs and 4 made it to blast. If our 4th embryo doesn't work for a sibling I would definitely consider natural modified if my AMH/AFC has dropped right down (which I expect it will have in 3.5 years!) I'm sure they'll be able to suggest the best option for you. I wouldn't want to do high dose stims and I like Creates approach. Good luck!
