First follicle scan - how many is a good amount

Hi, I've had my first scan today ( day 6, short protocol, 150 menopur) the nurse didn't tell me a lot she just said "textbook" but I asked how many follicles she saw and apparently there is 10 on the one ovary with 4 about the same size and 4 on the other ovary all the same size.
Can anyone more experienced advise if this is a decent amount for where I am in stimming atm?
I have pcos so was put on a low dose as they thought I might over stimulate but this doesn't seem to be the case (which I know is a good thing)

Thanks

Hello, try not to worry too much re how many - it seems to change throughout, some may respond and some may not. My first round I expected 10 eggs and got 14. This round I had 34 follicles at my baseline so was on a low dose too, but then only got 6 mature eggs in the end. However 4 made it to 5 day blast. Main thing is you’re responding! Sometimes more follicles will give lots of eggs but they might not be as good quality. I read anything over 15 starts to compromise on egg quality so sounds pretty good to me. X

Thank you so much for replying!! Yes I had 22 follicles on mine so that's what they probably based my dosage on, as you say at least I'm responding.
I guess I was just expecting to have quite a few more but I know it's still early days and things can change. And you're right it's all about the quality, it only takes one doesn't it.

@elsaesmeralda I felt exactly the same! When he said 34 I was like oh my god amazing I’ll get so many eggs. Then when I had my egg collection they came in and said 9 but only 6 mature. I was like what the hell...but turns out getting a lower amount of eggs was actually way better for us in terms of quality. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to worry. I think you always think more eggs equals more chances but it never seems to actually work like that. X

Definitely, it's also a lot of reading on here and online seeing women say how many follicles they got so you kinda gear yourself up that that's what's to aim for.

34 follicles is loads! Was you uncomfortable before your egg collection?
Let's hope the ones I do manage to get are mature! I'm worrying now as the ovary that is polycystic is the one with 10 on so I'm thinking they'll all be immature!

No I expected to be but only a few actually responded in the end! I do wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t been on such a low dose but I can’t complain with the result. I did have quite a bit of pain after which apparently was due to the follicles. Have they said what your trigger shot is? I think the higher the trigger the more likely they will yield mature eggs. I think, might be wrong, just from what I’ve read on here! X

elsaesmeralda · 27/11/2020 20:26

Where are you now with the ivf journey?? How many cycles have you done?
I've had no bloating etc so far, not that I'm complaining it's just I'm suprised as when I was on clomid I was in a lot of pain so expected to be worse during this.

I've just checked the trigger is Gonasi 5000 ui and there is two boxes of it

Yeah that’s a double trigger so should help with maturity!
We’ve had two cycles. So our first none of my eggs fertilised! We were so shocked, so naive and just expected we’d have a baby. Then obviously lockdown happened so we just had a second fresh cycle. Got 4 blasts so transferred 1 fresh and froze 3. Unfortunately ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks, so will look to do a FET in January. Is this your first? X

elsaesmeralda · 27/11/2020 21:11

Fingers crossed then.

I bet you was gutted none fertilised! I keep imaging this happening to me because of egg quality due to pcos! It took me years to conceive my ds (not ttc at the time but unaware of an issue) and the consultant thinks he was just luck!

I'm sorry about your miscarriage that's just heartbreaking. How many do you have in the freezer?
This is our first ivf, been ttc second now for 3 years, clomid didn't work and also metformin has regulated my periods but still no baby. We are doing a FET too as clinic have advised it

We were literally so shocked!! The whole thing completely shocked me to be honest. Wed be trying for a couple of years and nothing happened. I assumed it was me so had all the tests and all was ok, then they said they had to test my partner as part of the protocol and it came back there was no sperm in the sample. So then after loads more tests it turned out he had cystic fibrosis! Asymptomatic so we never had any idea. Was a huge shock. We’ve got 3 in the freezer, they’re all good quality but the one we transferred was 5AA so it’s made me feel so anxious that if that one hasnt worked the others won’t. I know that’s probably ridiculous. Aw how old is ds? There’s a lot of evidence to suggest FET is better than fresh so let’s hope we’re both lucky! When will your egg collection be? X

elsaesmeralda · 28/11/2020 06:30

Wow I didn't even realise you could have that with no symptoms! I bet that was a major shock.
You've a good number in the freezer then. I see a lot on here how the embryo people didn't expect to implant does so I wouldn't worry too much (easier said than done) as you said it only takes one.
He is just turned 6. It's funny because I used to worry I had something wrong, and then I got pregnant and decided all must be okay, but I was actually right as we've realised all these years ttc. He was just that one good egg that popped out, pure luck.

Yes my consultant said the same aswell, it's a shame having to wait that bit longer but if it means more chance then that's fine!
Well I've got a day 11 scan this coming Wednesday so I'll find out then. When are they usually after that scan do you know?
