First cycle & risk of OHSS

Hi everyone,

I'm new to IVF & will hopefully be starting my first cycle with ABC at the end of October. (I'm still trying to get my head around the process)

I had my baseline scan on Monday which showed 21 follicles, the consultant advised today I would probably have to have a frozen transfer as I'm more likely to suffer with OHSS. My emotions are all over the place anyway, but it feels like another hurdle has been put infront of us.

Has anyone else been warned about this & been able to go ahead with a fresh transfer?

I think I just need to hear some positive stories.

I went ahead with a fresh transfer after developing mild ohss and I actually regret it in hindsight, it wasn't a successful cycle. I know the waiting is awful but there's evidence suggesting frozen cycles might be more successful than fresh, so it could be an advantage.

@Llamapolice sorry to hear that.
I didn't know about them being more successful, that's good to know thank you.

Another worry is the cost of FET, it will almost double the cost! Leaving us short if we need another cycle.

I know we'll just get on with it if it comes to it, I'm just having a wobble today.

@Cocomelt not much consolation for you at this point but our second cycle went much better, the stim meds were adjusted so I didn't develop so many eggs or get ohss and it worked! There is trial and error with IVF! Good luck with your cycle!

I was told the same thing and it was looking likely I was going to be a freeze all but because my blood tests were okay and collected 12 eggs, they went ahead with fresh. I’ve since developed OHSS - Sometimes severe abdo pain and sickness/nausea since Monday and I’m pregnant (very early) . I don’t have regrets it’s just scary when feeling that unwell. It’s settled this evening but I’ve been throwing up most of the day. I have polycystic ovaries and on the scan said it looked “busy” so I’m wondering if they left a few follicles and the hcg/early pregnancy has just exacerbated things. Hope everything goes well for you xx

@JandL2020 Your experience gives me hope as i am at the edge of OHSS (2nd time) with my fresh cycle as i am PCO too. May i ask how many follicles you had at scans .. did all ended up having eggs ?

Thank you @Llamapolice, I'm trying to keep a level head but It's not easy. I'm torn between feeling excited & checking myself.

Congratulations @JandL2020, thank you for sharing & I hope you feel better soon.

@duckhouse by the 3rd and 4th scan there were lots of little follicles and I think about 8 that were bigger only one or 2 of mature size. By 4th scan was when the nurse said it looked busy and that worried me. I didn’t precisely write the numbers down as the nurse wasn’t keen to show me in detail as there was a lot of them to track on her chart. The pain has now settled - I’m only awake due to slight cramps, feeling sick and the progesterone - so it is more likely more my body responding to early pregnancy I think. X

@JandL2020 great to hear you were successful! Hope you're feeling better soon.

I'm also OHSS risk due to having polycystic ovaries - @Llamapolice can you remember what your dosage was adjusted to?
