29 eggs, 6 fertilised

Hi all,
My partner has just completed her egg collection. She has been incredibly unwell and after taking 29 eggs yesterday she can’t have a fresh transfer. We were very hopeful on numbers. We are same sex so sperm is donor from a clinic and very good mobility.
Today we have been told only 6 have fertilised properly (17 were not fully mature apparently).
She is beyond devastated. This follows me having three miscarriages and 2 unsuccessful transfers myself. Different donor.
At this stage I just don’t know how we carry on. I know we may still get lucky and get some good numbers, but she’s so ill and it feels so disappointing, it’s hard to be positive.
Can anybody share positive stories from similar numbers?

My own experience is different from your own but in my case it was definitely quality not quantity. I had 6 eggs collected (which I was really disappointed with) only 4 fertilised 2 became 5 day blasts and 2 did nothing much. We had 1 5AA blast fresh transferred which is now my cheeky toddler and we're waiting to do FET on the other 4AB blast and keeping our fingers crossed for a sibling.
Fingers crossed for you IVF was the hardest thing I've ever put myself through emotionally and whilst I will do the FET I absolutely will not face IVF again.

Thanks @ArtfulScreamer, that’s wonderful news. Fingers crossed for your FET.

Please dont be disheartened..
Ive had lots of cycles, lots of eggs and good fertilization rates, apart from my last one...
The most recent i got 24 eggs and only 5 fertilised. I honestly thought i was out!

However, day 5 came and i had 4 top quality embryos left. I had 1 transferred and 3 frozen (ive had 8 cycles, lots of M/C and a son who is 5 and never have i had frozen embryos)
Anyway, i transferred my final 2 in July and im nearly 11 weeks pregnant (not out the woods yet though).

Its quality over quantity

Good luck

I got loads of eggs during my cycles and hardly any of them fertilised. Out of two cycles I had over 40 eggs and only one made it to be implanted. She’s now asleep upstairs.

My cousin had 28 eggs, only 3 fertilised. All 3 were transferred and she became pregnant with twins, the twins have just started high school last week.

N.b they wouldn't transfer 3 embryos now, all 3 were poor quality and back when she had the transfer, multiples egg transfers were more common. Most clinics will allow 2 at a push nower days.

If your partner has OHSS the huge drop off is actually normal as large numbers of follicles doesn't mean large numbers of mature eggs and actually the quality tends to be much lower

I'd probably try a much milder protocol next time - I did natural modified IVF - 2 cycles total of 9 follicles and 4 top quality blastocysts- currently pregnant with twins with 2 of the blastocysts and the other 2 frozen

@ivfbeenbusy thank you for sharing that, very helpful. We will talk to the clinic about that for sure. Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope it’s goes really well.

@Pinktruffle wow 3 transferred in one go, that’s amazing! What a fabulous result!
