Tips for pre IVF Covid swab

Not sure if this is in the right place to get maximum advice, but throwing it out here anyway assuming that others like me are having to do Covid swabs prior to being allowed to start their treatment.

I will have to do 2, the first is in just over 3 weeks. I wondered if anybody has any advice/tips for having it done? I have a really over reactive gag reflex so I’m so worried they won’t even be able to get the swab anywhere near where they need it in my throat before I gag. I tried last night to just keep my mouth wide open with my tongue out and I gagged after less than 5 seconds Sad I really don’t want to have my chance at treatment taken away!

I think in most cases it is a nasal swab, so hopefully you should find it okay? It is rather uncomfortable but not awful. I don't think there is any way to make it better - just focus on the reason you're having it done and take a few steady breaths 😊

Thanks, if it’s just a nasal swab I can probably cope with that. I’ll just be upset if I get foiled due to something I can’t control. Fingers crossed for nasal swab only!

I gag super easily too and they still managed. Try not to think about it too hard, sure you’ll be ok. X

I had one and it's a nasal and oral swab (not for IVF purposes, but I think they are all the same). It's not as bad as you think, my brother had one too and has an awful gag reflex but they said what they managed to get from him was fine. Don't build it up in your head, I always find that makes the anxiety worse. And it has to be the only good reason for having a covid swab! Good luck with everything xxx

Mine was throat and nasal. It’s much harder to do on yourself than other people will find it and it’s really quick so try not to worry too much
