Private HSG test

Hi,

I’ve been referred for an HSG test. However I’ve just found out they aren’t able to do the tests in my area yet and although they might start up again soon they only do 2 appointments a week. I’m worried I won’t be able to secure an appointment for several months especially as they have to be timed correctly during the first 10 days of a cycle.

Has anyone had this test done privately? Would be good to hear any experiences, including costs and whether you were able to use the results for further NHS treatment.

It's very difficult to get one done privately as they require an x ray machine so is one of the few tests which can't be done at a fertility clinic. I looked in to it and it was about £3k privately at a Bupa hospital

Also I tried getting mine covered by my private healthcare but because it's classed as a "fertility" investigation it won't be covered

I have to be honest here and say I've had the test done twice and other than telling you if there is a blockage it can give false hope as it can't tell if the tube is actually work or not. There is no test for that.

I still went on to lose both my tubes to ectopic pregnancies despite both tubes looking "perfect" on the HSG

Even when I last had one done last year pre covid the wait time was minimum 3-4 months on the NHS

Hi I had a Hycosy done privately before my NHS appointment. Totally get where @ivfdreaming is coming from (also had an ectopic with IVF despite normal hycosy) but I knew our NHS fertility clinic would want one before progressing to IVF. It does the same thing as HSG but using USS rather than x-ray. Also they did a full pelvic USS as part of it (which I hadn’t had either) so they looked at uterus/ ovaries and did antral follicle count. It cost £600 in London 3 years ago.

Ps. Our NHS clinic did accept the test, it was done privately by a gynaecology consultant who also works for the NHS at a different hospital. I don’t know if all clinics would accept a private test though

Thank you, I appreciate your replies. I’m worried because it just seems like it’ll be pot luck whether or not I get an appointment even when the NHS starts doing the procedure again.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if there is an issue with my Fallopian tubes as I’ve had surgery in the past. I might ask whether the fertility clinic would accept a private hycosy in place of an HSG and explore that option.

Part of me wonders whether we should just go straight for private IVF as it feels like it’s the likely outcome whatever. We should be offered one round on the NHS but our consultant seemed to think we’d need to have been trying for 2 years and I don’t want to wait that long (although I read the CCG policy as saying 1 year as I’m over 35). And as it seems hard enough to get through the testing I can only imagine how long the wait will be for IVF.

I’ve just been referred for this privately as the nhs are not currently performing this in Wales at the moment.

I’m getting it done next cycle at a spire hospital, cost is £350

Grumpsy · 11/08/2020 22:15

Just needed to add I needed my go or consultant to write a referral letter to my chosen hospital.

I was supposed to go pre lockdown but they booked me in for an ultrasound instead by mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄 - at least from the ultrasound I know I don’t have any cysts etc

Banoffeepie91 · 11/08/2020 23:01

I’ve got a private one booked next week. Spire hospitals do them but you do need a referral sent through to them to book a test. It’s around £450 for the test and then I have to pay £40 for a pregnancy test before it which I think is slightly ridiculous. I understand they need to check you’re not pregnant before but £40! I even asked if I could bring my own and do it infront of them but they said no.
I think a lot of people must be booking private ones because they said when I booked it they’d been really busy with them and they don’t usually get asked for this test much.
We’re doing everything private so don’t know about nhs accepting them but the clinic I’m with also do nhs and so does our consultant so I assume they would.

I had mine privately and it cost around £350 if I remember correctly. I would definitely go private if you can afford it, as I was also told it would be a long wait. Around 9 months I was told I'd likely be looking at on NHS.

Quiptic · 12/08/2020 00:03

Thanks all, this is really helpful. I will definitely investigate Spire.

@Banoffeepie91 wow £40 for a pregnancy test - you’re right that really is ridiculous!

As a last ditch attempt to find out why we can't conceive #2 (been trying for over 2.5 years), I'm booking to have a hycosy done privately. I was referred by the fertility clinic for a HSG at the start of the year. I had the pre ultrasound and chlamydia screening but then covid...
I'm in Wales, but the clinic will be in North West England. They've said it's £250 for the initial consultation, then £650 for the actual hycosy. Seems a bit steeper than other places?! They also said they don't do HSGs. Not entirely sure what the difference is!

Hope2shine · 15/12/2021 13:10

Kelly Anne, where did you get this test done?

phenix10 · 11/11/2022 12:49

Hello. After a devastating 2nd trimester miscarriage we are planning a second IVF round. Our overseas fertility doctor has asked us to to a HSG test, would you mind sharing the name of the clinic where you did yours?

Quiptic · 11/11/2022 15:58

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear you've been through that. Not sure whether you were asking me but I ended up having an HSG with Dr Penman at the Spire Clinic in Kent. See fetal-medicine.co.uk

Wishing you all the best with your fertility journey.
